Chapter 21
Amelia ignored the driver’s horrified glance at her torn clothes and open wounds that were still bleeding and looked out of the window, deep in thought.
“I will pay extra for the cleaning. Please bear with it till then,” She whispered ever so silently.
The driver wanted to correct Amelia and tell her that wasn’t what he was worried about, but after seeing her close her eyes, he kept himself from speaking and disturbing her rest. She probably needed it.
Amelia took a deep breath, gritting her teeth as the cold wind against her bloodied skin felt like a coat of salt rubbing on her wounds. She held her side tightly, the wound on her left arm being the deepest of all.
Her legs trembled from the fight, her heart still wary and anxious. What happened today had nearly turned into a nightmare for her, probably something that could’ve taken her life.
She barely escaped.
No. That was wrong. She escaped because that man had arrived. That mysterious man with his scythe and inhuman speed like no other. That man who felt familiar and unfamiliar at the same time and called her his.
Amelia couldn’t even fathom what kind of nightmare it would’ve become if the man hadn’t interfered. Then again, that voice p>
’Do you think I will let you die so easily after all the efforts I put into you p>
What did that voice mean? And what did that man want to say when he said he wanted her to see the truth? What kind of truth was he talking about? And why did it come at the expense of her life?
Was her life even in danger?
Amelia groaned as the car moved on a speed breaker, and the driver apologized quickly, making her wave her hand in dismissal.
Though her body wasn’t active like in her last life, she was still grateful for her instincts that made her stand until the man arrived.
Amelia opened her eyes, the thought of King Cyrus Valentino suddenly crossing her mind.
She didn’t have the energy to move independently. It was dangerous, but it was necessary.
She didn’t want to alert the palace, not when she wasn’t sure if Dominic was really behind this attack. Cyrus would explode if he found out. This attack, even though he hated her, would be taken as an attack against royalty, and without proof, it might hinder his future position in the trials.
Dominic was a cunning man and would come out of it unscathed, but he wouldn’t lose this opportunity to put King Cyrus down, and it was exactly what she didn’t want.
She didn’t want to become a liability for him, not when he already didn’t trust her.
Amelia licked her chapped lips, thinking about all the herbs she would need to prepare the decoctions that might help her heal faster or at least look presentable enough before the King when she returned to the palace.
After paying the fare for the cab, Amelia looked at the large building of Crescent Wood Hospital and walked stiffly toward the emergency wards, her movement hindered by the pain she felt.
“Oh my god, you need help,” the passing-by nurse exclaimed. Amelia passed a stiff smile to her, her vision turning slightly dark, blurring into the weird smell of the hospital. She had lost a bit too much blood today.
Alpha Killian, who had been following Amelia and asked one of his men to contact the royals before moving, stood behind the closed doors, contemplating if he should walk inside the hospital.
While this was exactly what Amelia would’ve wanted, his attention, he felt a little weird today, especially considering her repulsive behavior from earlier.
“Well, she had helped my mother heal. That’s the least I can do,” Killian made up his mind and was about to enter when he felt the shift in the air.
The sudden tension was filled with a dark, oppressing aura that made even the hospital staff turn towards the entrance.
Alpha Killian turned around to see who it was, and just like he had guessed, the King had arrived.
Cyrus Valentino stood there, tall and proud, draped in a dark trench coat. His eyes were brewing a storm, and his stance was like that of a predator, ready to hunt whoever hurt his people.
His gaze was lethal as it fixated on Alpha Killian.
“Your Majesty,” Killian bowed a little to show his submission and respect, and Cyrus looked at him briefly.
He didn’t say anything, nor did he need to. His eyes swept over Alpha Killian as if he was merely looking at an ant before Fabian rushed to him and nodded.
Without looking back, Cyrus strode towards the ward in which Amelia was shifted.
Inside the private emergency room, Amelia sat on the bed, her skin flushed with the healing herbs and medicines while her wounds were wrapped in thick bandages.
She had barely gained consciousness. The nurse had given her a decoction, and she was about to ask her for another set of herbs when the door burst open, catching her attention.
Her pupils dilated as soon as her eyes met with the cold blue ones, and she couldn’t help but gulp, looking like a wife caught cheating on her husband.
Her cheeks turned red, and she clenched her fists, unsure what to say.
“Leave,” Cyrus’s voice was thick with dominance, his gaze sharp, and the nurse nodded.
Amelia also nodded and stood from the bed when Cyrus glared at her.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“Well, didn’t you ask us to leave?” Amelia asked, almost dumbfounded at her stupidity.
Fabian – Princess, why are you making it more difficult? He almost wanted to cry.
Cyrus, on the other hand, wanted to crack the girl’s head open and see if it even contained anything.
Amelia quickly sat on the bed, a hiss leaving her mouth, and Cyrus looked at Fabian, who nodded and left them alone.
“What happened?” Cyrus asked.
“It’s nothing. I just Amelia paused. There was no point hiding. He wasn’t a normal wolf who wouldn’t know about anything. His men would find it for him even if she wouldn’t tell him.
“I was attacked. In the second last lecture on the forest trail, I was looking for some herbs since we were allowed to go three miles into it. I didn’t inform you because I didn’t want to cause a ruckus and look like a weakling who p>
“You thought wrong,” Cyrus’s words cut Amelia mid-sentence, and she pressed her lips into a thin line.
Cyrus moved closer to her, his eyes scanning every single wound on her body, and she suddenly felt flustered.
“Where else did they touch?” He asked, his fingers gripping her chin, forcing her to look into his eyes as his piercing gaze kept her captive.
“You were bleeding, all alone. How could you not think of calling your husband?” Cyrus asked, his question making her heart tremble at the word ’husband p>
“You hate me,” the words escaped her mouth before she could control it, and she looked away.
“How could I call you and trouble you? I didn’t want to look like a liability,” She whispered gently.
Cyrus’s gaze wavered for a second. It was so minuscule that it was hard to catch, but it was there. He didn’t deny that her words made something shift inside him, and he lowered his head a little, almost face-to-face with her, before whispering gently.
“That doesn’t mean you can allow my enemies to bully you, to touch what is mine,” he whispered, making Amelia’s heart skip a beat. The smirk on King Cyrus’s face was a clear indication that he knew exactly what he was doing and could hear her heart pretty clearly.
The realization made Amelia flush even more, and Cyrus looked at her for a few seconds before his expression hardened again.
“I will find out who did this,” He said.
“I know,” Amelia said softly, licking her lips nervously.
I know you will find out, and that’s exactly what worries me. She thought.
