Ahh, I see He’s gonna play that card with me. Telling me how unwanted and unworthy I was… blah blah blah. But the thing is that pretty much sums up our relationship. I mean, we are both lusting after each other like horny dogs, and this marriage was nothing but a sham because of some inheritance.

Elias fixed me with a pointed stare, probably because my expression was neutral to his insults. Right, I should look offended. I’m not very good at acting, but my lying skills are improving faster because my life has become so messy lately.
“I know about the inheritance, but it has nothing to do with that. What Ares feels for me is beyond anything you’d ever understand p>

He chucked, and light dimples became visible on his cheeks. “He picked a smart one, and I must applaud my son for that p>

I opened my mouth to speak, but he suddenly snapped his fingers. Isaac pulled out a briefcase, placed it on the table, and opened it.

“Yes,” I replied, amused.
His icy stare was prolonged. By the passing second, it was like I’d transformed into a block of ice or maybe spilled all my secrets since I learned how to keep one.
Regardless, I remained composed, just occasionally gulping and maybe sweating more than usual.
Goosebumps rose on my skin when I felt a trail of sweat run down the center of my boobs. My smile faltered, but I kept it fixed as I could, but he wasn’t giving me any chances.
Elias snapped his fingers again, and this time, Isaac brought out his gun and pointed it at my head.
“W-What are you doing?” I asked in a whisper, eyeing the pistol pressing into my skin.
Why do they keep pointing guns like sticks? Something is really wrong with this family.
A sharp click cut through the silence, and I knew Isaac was gonna pull the trigger the moment the order was given.
“Let’s walk through this again,” Elias began in a far colder tone, and suddenly it wasn’t burning hot anymore but a chill that broke through me like hives.
“I want you to be honest with me, Catherine Lane. I dislike deception, and not many walk out without a missing body part when they lie to my face p>
Oh God! He’s not joking! Is this man a murderer, or something?
“Ares is being reckless, dragging you into a world you have no business with. Only you will pay the price for that p>
My breathing shuddered as I tried to swallow saliva, but it felt like I was gobbling ice instead.
“Now what did I say I want from you p>
“H-Honesty,” I murmured, my voice barely audible.
“Good.” He rested his hands on his cane. “Did Ares pay you to become his wife p>
My heart slammed louder and louder until the rest of his questions blocked out. I’m gonna die. Those three words echoed in my head, and I’m on the verge of peeing myself out of fright.
My phone rang, the ringtone slicing the killing intent in the room. Elias kept his cold eyes on my lap. I leveled my gaze, and the screen was lit with the caller: Devil Husband.
“Pick the call,” Elias commanded. “Speak nothing of the details in this room p>
With shaky hands, I swiped the answer button and pressed the phone to my ear.
“H-Hey, honey I said, not bothering to hide the fear in my voice.
“Where are you p>
“With my father-in-law. We’re having a heartwarming talk p>
Silence took over the line, and I prayed he’d keep speaking because his voice was the only thing keeping me sane right now.
“Are you alright p>
“Y-Yes p>
“Put me on speaker p>
I took the phone off my ear and tapped on the screen.
“Open the fucking door, Isaac,” Ares’ voice came out lethal.
I snapped my eyes to Isaac, who looked taken aback. He turned his attention to Elias as if waiting for an order.
Elias did not look pleased at all and only offered a nod in response.
Isaac took the gun away, shoved it in the side of his hips, and I released a breath I didn’t know I was holding.
He walked to the door, and it took almost forever until he unlocked and pried it open.
Ares stood in the doorway, phone to his ear, one hand in his pocket, and the mere sight of him made my heart sing in joy.
