Picking up something one had given up for so long especially studying–wasn’t as easy as simply deciding to do it. To show genuine sincerity and build up my confidence before approaching Mr. Holland, I began an intense study routine after seeing Cordelia off.
Since some specialized books were rare and unavailable online, I often spent my time at the city library. I stayed there to study until it closed.
After leaving the library, I would cross the street, On the opposite side was a ravioli restaurant. This restaurant had been around for over ten years.
The owners, a husband and wife, made fresh ravioli daily. The food there was incredibly delicious. When I was still a student, I loved coming here after visiting the library, especially on cold winter nights.
After consuming a plate of steaming hot ravioli, one would feel that life was complete.
While waiting at the crosswalk for the light to turn green for pedestrians , my phone started ringing. Just as ! reached into my pocket to grab it, someone slammed into me from behind.
Caught completely off guard, I didn’t even have time to cry out before I was sent stumbling forward. Before I could worry whether my body which was held together with steel plates would fall apart, I saw a car speeding straight toward me.
Panic overwhelmed me. I desperately tried to twist my body to get out of the way, but my heavy body refused to cooperate.
As despair set in and I closed my eyes, ready to meet my end, I suddenly found myself enveloped in a solid embrace.
The crisp, cool scent of pine filled my senses, and I didn’t need to open my eyes to know who had saved me. “Are you alright?” Shaun’s deep voice was steady and elegant like a cello, and it carried a calming warmth.
His presence exuded an inexplicably calming air. It made me feel that as long as he was there, nothing could harm me. He gave off a profound sense of safety.
“I’m fine… I’m just a bit unsteady on my feet,” I said breathlessly.
The near–death experience had rattled me to the core. Even though I was physically unharmed, the lingering fear left my legs weak and unable to support me.
His voice softened further. “It’s okay. I’ll hold you.”
“Thank you.” After expressing my gratitude, I glanced around at the people nearby.
The force of the collision earlier was too strong to have been accidental. But before I could investigate further, a girl who looked about 17 dragged a boy of around 14 over to me.
“I’m so sorry, miss! I was playing around with my little brother, and he accidentally bumped into you. He almost pushed you into the street! I’m really sorry! You can deal with us however you like.”
As she spoke, the girl grabbed her brother and bowed deeply in apology. Before I could say anything, both of t started crying. Tears streamed down their faces like a faucet that had been turned on.
Their sobbing was so pitiful that even though the crowd knew how dangerous the incident had been–in fact, it was nearly fatal–they couldn’t help but feel sorry for the siblings.
Someone murmured, “It was just an accident. You can’t be too harsh on them.”

I frowned and wondered why troublesome kids kept crossing my path. A few days ago, I had almost been hit by a falling flowerpot from an upstairs balcony. Now, I had nearly been pushed into oncoming traffic.
Each incident seemed like a coincidence, yet every single one had come close to taking my life.
“Sorry, miss. We’re so sorry…” The teenagers cried even harder when I didn’t respond, and their sobs grew louder and louder.
Their wails prompted the onlookers to start persuading me not to hold it against them. Their words left me feeling helpless. I’d nearly died but couldn’t even scold the perpetrators to vent my shock and anger.
It wasn’t that I wanted to make a fuss over the teenagers‘ behavior–it was just that the situation had been way too terrifying.
If Shaun hadn’t saved me in time, I would’ve been reduced to nothing more than a splattering of flesh on the road. Having barely escaped death, how could anyone simply shrug it off?
The more people tried to mediate, the louder the teenagers cried.
