Irvin called me before I even made it home.
“Is this really necessary, Emi?” he asked.

He might not have been direct, but I knew what he was referring to Julianne had surely run as fast as she could and complained to him about what I had said.
He was calling me because he wanted to back up his dearest “sister and stepmother.
I huffed disdainfully. “Why wouldn’t it be?”
Irvin sighed wearily. “Regardless, Emi, she-”
“Don’t tell me that she’s still my sister. You may consider her as such, but I don’t!”
I absolutely hated hearing people tell me Julianne was my sister , no matter what. It was as though I couldn’t hold her accountable for anything she did just because of that.
“You know the drugging incident fiasco happened because of a misunderstanding, Emi. Can’t you please let it go?”
“No, I don’t believe that. In fact, I think it was all a scheme to set me up! I’m going to keep digging into it, and you can’t stop me! If you can accept this, great. But if you can’t, feel free to help Julianne.”
Irvin had wanted to say more, but he instantly fell silent. He knew if he chose to help her, that would mean he was going to walk away from the divorce with nothing.
He finally realized why I was going after Julianne so determinedly. It was because I wanted to force our divorce. I was trying to make him violate our agreement. Once he did, our divorce would be finalized.
After a long pause, he finally spoke. “Do you really want to divorce me that badly, Emi?” His voice was thick with hurt.
“Yes,” I replied immediately.
That simple “yes” from me was like a sharp, icy blade. It plunged cruelly into his heart. The pain it caused him was so intense that he couldn’t catch his breath.
I hung up without waiting to hear his response. Right now, my heart was colder than the heart of winter.
I thought I could wash up and go straight to bed once I reached home.
Unfortunately, I spotted two familiar figures. They were standing in front of my door like sentries.
My head began to ache at the sight of them.
“Why are you only just coming home, Millicent? It’s so late. Do you know how long we’ve been waiting for you out here?” Mom scolded.
Her anger flared instantly upon seeing me. It was as though we weren’t mother and daughter, but rather mortal enemies due to a long–standing grudge.
I had definitely instructed the security guards to stop letting Momin. So I didn’t understand why they still did.
Before I could harden my face and bite back, Jeremy intervened.
He seemed somewhat awkward as he looked at me. Perhaps it was because the proverbial “curtain” bet ‘n us had been pulled down after his previous impulsive rant.
As though wanting to end the awkwardness as quickly as possible, he skipped the pleasantries and went straight to the point.
“Remember how you said you wouldn’t press charges against Dad if the investigation revealed he didn’t conspire with Lianne to frame you? Well, he’s innocent. So come with us to the police station tomorrow and give a new statement so he can be released.

Mom and Jeremy were taken aback by my straightforward response it seemed they hadn’t expected me to agree so easily
So when I opened my mouth to continue speaking, they both looked at me with expressions that read “I knew you wouldn’t agree so easily“.
I smiled sardonically at their reaction.
