news of Julianne’s arrest reached me quickly. When Mark told me he could get her sentenced to at least ten years in prison, I raised my glass to toast him.
Feeling good, I drank a little more than usual.
I walked home, a little tipsy and light–headed. But when I reached my apartment building and saw Irvin standing in the cold wind, my good mood instantly plummeted.
Even though he had given me everything he had, I genuinely didn’t want to see him ever again, especially not now.
Just as I was about to ignore him and head upstairs, Irvin called out to me.
“Lianne was arrested,” he said.
I stopped walking and turned back with a cold sneer. “Why? Are you here to beg me to let your dear sister go?”
The sarcasm in my eyes pierced his heart. He had no idea how terrible of a person he was to me, that even now, I assumed he had come to plead for Julianne.
“No, Emi, I came to apologize. I’m sorry, it was my-”
“Stop apologizing,” I cut him off. “I won’t forgive you, and I don’t want to hear it. Like I said before, if you really feel sorry, then don’t ever show up in front of me again.”
I looked at him seriously and said, “Irvin, I really don’t want to see you again.”
Irvin, who still had something to say, suddenly turned pale. His once tall and sturdy frame now looked frail and fragile, as if a gust of wind could knock him down.
I ignored him and went upstairs.
Julianne, afraid that Irvin wouldn’t help her, turned to Mom instead.
So, the next morning, Mom was waiting for me at my door.
“Millicent, how could you be so cruel? You actually wanted to send your own sister to prison?” she asked.
I had long since grown numb to Mom’s twisted logic and how everything was always my fault no matter what. Her words didn’t affect me anymore.
I let out a mocking laugh. “She wasn’t cruel when she hired kidnappers to take my life, but I’m cruel for letting the police arrest her? Mom, there’s seriously something wrong with your head. I suggest you get your brain checked.”

Every time Mom came, she ended up so furious that she couldn’t even speak. Yet, it didn’t stop her from coming.
After a long pause, she said, “Lianne said she never meant to harm you! She wasn’t the mastermind behind the kidnapping. She was just a victim, like you! I know you hate her, but this really wasn’t her fault. Withdraw charges right now!”
I didn’t respond. I just looked at her like she was insane.

She snapped, “Millicent, when did you become so heartless and rebellious? I am your mother! ”
She truly had no idea how I had become like this. I used to be such an obedient child.

Seeing that I was completely indifferent and that playing the “mother ” card was no longer working, a thought crossed her mind. She clenched her fists tightly, as if she was hesitating and struggling with something
After a long time, she finally said, “Emilia Quill, I gave birth to you. I gave you life. You owe me a life in return. If you let your sister go this time, consider it repayment. You won’t owe me anything anymore. I’ll cut ties with you and never appear in front of you again.”
