Many companies regularly engaged in charity work, so I didn’t read too much into Gideon’s words.
I simply said, “Then we should donate it under your company’s name if you plan on doing charity.”
Gideon would be bearing all the cost, after all. Additionally, donating under his company’s name would enhance its image. Not only that, it would also strengthen the company’s brand and entitle it to tax benefits.
Hence, it didn’t feel right for me to take credit for the donation too. Besides, I wouldn’t benefit from it in any way.
Gideon chuckled softly at my words. “Do you really not understand what I was implying, Emi?” he asked.
I stared blankly at him–I honestly had no clue.
Realizing this, Gideon sighed and said, “Looks like I haven’t made myself clear enough.”
His words made me think back to when I was treating Louis to a meal for helping me get released from the detention center. Back then, Louis had brought him along.
I recalled the words Gideon had said to me at the time and was about to speak.
However, he beat me to it.
“I like you, Emi! I’ve liked you since high school and for 10 years now!” he exclaimed.
Then, he said, “The only reason I was friends with Irvin was to get close to you. I wished you happiness when you discovered you loved him. I also hoped you would have a joyful marriage when you both got married. And now that you’re single again, I’m hoping you’ll give me a chance to pursue you!”
Gideon didn’t wait for me to respond before quickly adding, “I know you’re focused on your research right now and don’t have any plans to start dating again, but I can wait! So when you’re ready to try again, please allow me to be the first in line!”
After he finished, he seemed afraid I would reject him because he quickly said he wasn’t in a hurry to hear my reply. Then, he claimed he had other matters to attend to and quickly left.
I watched his departing figure and didn’t know what to think. As he said, my research currently occupied all of my thoughts, and I hadn’t even thought about dating. Since I was at a loss, I decided not to dwell on it.
Glancing at my watch, I noticed it was soon time for my meeting with Shaun. So, I got up and headed to the private restaurant across the street.
As a researcher, I had limited time to spare, especially during the critical stages of my research experiment. Because of this, I wanted to get everything done during the few hours of break I had. Thus, I had arranged to meet with Irvin, Gideon, and Shaun consecutively and at locations close to each other.
The reason I was meeting Shaun was because I had some academic questions that I wanted to discuss. As this would take the longest time, I scheduled it last.
I would also fulfill my promise of treating him to a nice meal while we had our discussion, killing two birds with
one stone.
Although Shaun was an expert on pure physics, I always had an epiphany whenever I discussed questions I was stuck on with him. Plus, he had a naturally calming air about him. Hence, I always felt better after our conversations, even when I was frustrated by my failed experiments.
Shaun arrived shortly after I did. He looked as elegant and refreshingly cool as ever.
