Chapter 328

Before I could say anything, William said , “ Someone will hand the child over to the police. ”
Then , he instructed his driver to depart.
We traveled some distance before William turned to me.
“If I really did intentionally destroy that man’s family like he claimed, would you think I deserved to die?” he asked.
I was caught off guard. I hadn’t expected him to ask that kind of question.
When I didn’t respond right away, William pressed, “Well?”
Seeing that he really wanted an answer, I thought it over for a moment and then said, “I don’t know how to judge whether or not you deserve to die. To me, you’re a good person, Mr. Ashford.
“You’ve raised Noah well too. That alone makes me think you’re not someone who would intentionally destroy another family. Even if you did, I’m sure you must have had your reasons. ”
William huffed. “You think I’m a good person?”
It seemed this was the first time someone had said that about him,
“You do know the only reason I’ve helped you is because of Noah,” he added, reminding me that he wasn’t an altruist.
“So? It doesn’t change the fact that you did. So that makes you a good person in my eyes,” I retorted.
William cocked an eyebrow at me. “Is that so? Even if I’ve done all kinds of unimaginable and heinous things to others? ”
His sharp question was to assess where I drew my moral line.
After a long contemplative moment, I answered, “I’m not a very noble person , nor do I hold myself to high moral standards. My actions are always based on what I believe is right.
“So, I think you’re a good person because you’ve helped me. And if you ever need help, I would do the same too. I can’t put myself in someone else’s shoes to judge you or decide if you deserve to die.”
William studied me closely. Upon seeing the honesty in my eyes , he chuckled softly and gently patted my head.
“Alright then. If you and Noah do end up together one day , I’ll welcome you into the Ashford family, ” he said.
William wasn’t an evil tyrant, but on the other hand, he also wasn’t a saint. So, hearing I could accept this pleased him.
I smiled awkwardly at him. “I didn’t say all that because I want to be with Noah, Mr. Ashford…”
“ I know,” William replied.
Then , still smiling, he gently patted my head again.
He wasn’t sure when he started taking an interest in me. But if he had to pinpoint it, it was probably after he had brought the long–lost Noah home. Noah hadn’t been able to stop talking about me and how he was willing to do anything to see me again.
Because of that, William became curious about me. Before he realized it, that curiosity had developed into interest.
Still, regardless of how much attention he gave me, I was the woman that Noah liked. Hence, he wouldn’t cross that line.
In the past, William didn’t think someone of my background could ever be accepted into the Ashford family–especially when it came to Noah’s grandfather. Thus, he never considered allowing me to truly be with Noah.
But now, if I ever reciprocated Noah’s romantic feelings, William would do everything in his power to make it happen.
