I knew I was being impulsive, but sometimes in life, one needed to act on impulse. Otherwise, we would be stuck in the muck forever and unable to pull ourselves out.
Gideon kept glancing at me after we got in the car. After hesitating for a while, he finally couldn’t hold it in and asked, “ Are you sure you want to get married, Emi?”
He regretted his words the moment they left his mouth. He was annoyed at himself for saying something that might make me change my mind about marrying him.
Gideon knew this was his only chance to make his dream of being with me come true. He had been pining after me from afar for ten years a whole decade.
Finally, he had the rare opportunity to make his dream a reality. Yet, he still asked such a question. He really wanted to kick himself.
Seeing how frustrated he was with himself only made me feel more strongly that he was a good man. Even though he was afraid I would change my mind, he still asked if I was sure of my decision
Gideon was concerned I would regret it in the future and agonize over it, so he wanted me to think it over again.
I thought to myself that my life wouldn’t be so bad if I married someone like him, who would have my best interests at heart
Gideon was a good person, intelligent, and handsome. His parents were wonderful people too. If a child were to grow up in such a home, he would surely grow up well.
My child would have a stable family and someone to care for him. Then, I could focus completely on my research , free from distractions or worries.
The more I thought about it, the more I felt marrying Gideon was a good choice. I knew I only felt this way because I was only thinking about the positives and ignoring the negatives, but so what? Since I had chosen this path, I was going to walk on it properly.
Except… Gideon and I had been too impulsive and too caught up in the moment. We were so focused on the decision to get married immediately that we had forgotten what day it was.
It wasn’t until we had arrived at City Hall and saw the doors were shut that we realized today was a Saturday. Government offices weren’t open on the weekends.
We stared dumbfoundedly at the locked doors. Then, we burst into laughter. We laughed at how eager we had been. It was to the point where we had forgotten it was the weekend!
Once we were done laughing, Gideon turned to me and said, “Well, we’re already outside. I remember the largest bridal boutique in Claudeville is nearby. Do you want to go take a look at some wedding dresses?”
Truthfully, I planned on just having a simple wedding. I never thought about wedding gowns or holding a proper ceremony. But then, thinking of Gideon’s wishes and his family’s expectations, I realized I couldn’t just think about my own wants.
Regardless of my reasons for marrying him, once we were, we would be husband and wife. This meant we would need to be considerate of each other moving forward. So, if Gideon wanted a wedding ceremony and to see me in a wedding dress, I would do it.
That being said…
“We can’t right now–not until we’ve gotten our marriage certificate. Until then, we’ll need to keep everything under wraps,” I said.
I didn’t need to explain further for Gideon to understand why we needed to be discreet about our marriage. That was the benefit
of knowing someone well.
He had been friends with Irvin for years, so he knew Irvin well too. Compared to me, Gideon didn’t want this to go wrong even

When we arrived , he parked the car and leaned over to unbuckle my seatbelt. As Gideon took in my delicate side profile, he felt a sudden rush of emotions. Unable to control himself, he leaned in to kiss my cheek , but I instinctively avoided it.
Suddenly, the air became awkward. Gideon was embarrassed by h impulsiveness. Meanwhile, I was embarrassed by my reaction.
