Thinking about how we’d be getting married the next day and officially becoming husband and wife, I grabbed the car keys from the table and drove to pick Gideon up from the bar.
Just as I arrived and was about to push open the door to the private room, I suddenly heard a voice from inside.
“Gideon, aren’t you marrying the woman you’ve loved for ten years tomorrow? You’ve always been so modest, never messing around with women. But now, right before marrying the love of your life, you’re looking for a woman? And specifically a virgin?”
I had already slightly opened the door, just enough to see Gideon’s expression.
I watched as he raised his glass and took a deep swig of alcohol. Then he said, “I really, really love her so much. You have no idea how excited and overwhelmed I was when she said she wanted to marry me. These past two days have felt like a dream!”
Hearing this, his friend looked even more confused. “If you love her that much, why are you hooking up with another woman before your wedding?”
Gideon replied, “Because the more I love her, the more I’m bothered by the fact that she was married before and had a miscarriage. That she had slept with another man for so many years .
“I know I shouldn’t care about these things, because she’s the one t’ve loved for so long. Being able to have her is the greatest blessing in my life. But I… the more I try not to care, the more it bugs me.
“I’m afraid that how I feel will affect my relationship with her. So I wanted to find another woman, a virgin, before the wedding. It’s like a way to make things even. After tonight, I’ll let go of all this and love her wholeheartedly!”
As he spoke, he took the tablet the server handed him and looked at the options available. Very quickly, he made his choice.
His friend then asked why he chose that particular woman, because her figure wasn’t as good as the others.
Gideon answered, “The shape of her face looks more like my love. Spending the night with this woman will feel like being with the younger version of her. That’ll be more meaningful.”
His friend laughed and hit him on the shoulder. “That’s true love indeed!”
He nodded seriously. “Yeah, I really love her.”
Hearing how serious he sounded, I was at a loss for words. I just instinctively stepped away when I saw the server walking
toward the door.
I had no idea how I made it out of the bar. It wasn’t until I felt the sudden cold air that I realized I had unknowingly stepped
outside.
And before I could fully come to my senses, I saw William leaning against his car and smoking a cigarette, clearly waiting for me.
Then I remembered that I had come here because one of Gideon’s friends called, saying he was drunk and needed me to pick him up. And that was how I overheard their conversation.
I instantly realized something.
Seeing that I wasn’t walking toward him, William stubbed out his cigarette and came over. “Still want to marry him?” he asked.
He didn’t bother to hide that this had all been his plan. I didn’t know what to say.
“People are inherently selfish,” he said. “No matter how much he wants you, once he has you , you’ll eventually become something he takes for granted.
“And if he’s already this bothered before he’s even with you, using his love for you as an excuse to find another woman, do you think you’ll be able to have the life you want after marrying him?”
I remained silent, not knowing what to say,
