Since Agatha had planned on switching one of the babies, she would, of course, switch out the bad one.
But because the enlightened shaman had already passed away, she had no way of determining which of the twins was the en called wicked one. She could only rely on her instincts.
Normally, when giving birth to twins, the first one was supposed to be more painful. However, when Timothy was born, Agatha hadn’t felt any pain at all. But when it was Irvin’s turn, she had been in so much pain that she had felt as though she was dying
Irvin had caused her so much pain. He hadn’t even spared Agatha, even though she was his mother.
She had recalled the shaman saying the evil twin would be a menace. Hence, she concluded Irvin had to be the prophesied one and had him swapped for a baby girl.
And now, from where she was standing, Agatha genuinely believed she had made the right choice.
Her beloved Timothy had sacrificed his life to save Irvin, a brother whom he had never met. Meanwhile, Irvin was capable of being so heartless.
Indignant, Agatha said, “You wanted to know why I switched you with the Sawyers‘ daughter back then? Fine, I’ll tell you! I did it because you were born evil! Someone like you…”
She went on, explaining how an enlightened shaman had declared one of her children would be born evil. She also told Irvin she had decided he was the wicked one because of how much pain she had been in when giving birth to him .
After listening to her explanation, Irvin couldn’t help laughing incredulously again. He felt everything in his life really was too absurd.
He had been abandoned and swapped out at birth because a so–called enlightened shaman’s divination had influenced Agatha to make a pain–based, arbitrary decision.
Then, a thought occurred to him. Looking at Agatha, Irvin asked, “Did my mother know you switched her child?”
The mother he was referring to was Lizzie, Phillip’s wife.
“Of course she knew!” Agatha answered. “We were classmates when we studied abroad. Lizzie knew I needed a girl, and she needed a boy to solidify her position. We had agreed to the switch beforehand.
“Why else do you think she never cared about you? Ever since you were a child, her frail health was just an excuse to avoid you!”
While she had believed Irvin to be the wicked twin, she still felt uneasy about what she had done. So, in the first few years following the swap, she had kept tabs on him.
That was how she knew Lizzie didn’t care for or love Irvin at all. As soon as Lizzie had completed her postpartum recovery, she had handed him to the Sawyers‘ butler, Mr. Sinclair. So, Irvin had been raised by the help.
Mr. Sinclair’s wife, Diana, had been more of a mother to Irvin than Lizzie. That was why he had grown up to be so caring and doted on the daughter of a hired help. It had also led him to the point of losing me.
This was another reason Agatha looked down on Irvin. How could a child who had been raised by the help ever compare to the precious son she had carefully brought up? How could someone like Irvin have the right to replace her beloved Timothy?
Irvin had never felt any love or attachment toward Agatha the way a child would for his parents. He also never expected anything from her as a mother. However, he was very attached to Lizzie.
In fact, Irvin had felt deeply guilty toward Lizzie. Her health had worsened because she had given birth to him, and she would often need bed rest. As such, he had believed he was the reason her health had deteriorated so badly.
When Lizzie had passed away, Irvin had been in indescribable pain. He also felt it was his fault that she had left this world so early. He had even believed he should never have been born.

“You were born a bad seed, Irvin,” Agatha spat. “I’m doing society a favor by wanting to take your life! Also, just like you said, I’m the one who gave you life. So, if I want to take it, I will!”
