The day of the confrontation, my father threw two papers in my face.

The other was a declaration severing our parent-child relationship.

I was furious then-angry that my father described my marriage as a transaction, insulting our sacred love.
Resolutely, I left with the wedding gift my mother left me and married Lucien.
Now I finally realize Dad was right.
Human relationships are transactions, each with its own agenda.
Lucien built his career, kept mistress after mistress, feeding his male ego.
