Three years of marriage, and I was finally pregnant.
Walking out of the hospital, I couldn’t stop staring at the ultrasound images, clutching them like they were made of gold.
This was the baby I’d been dreaming about for so damn long!
I practically threw myself into the first Uber I could find, dying to get home and share the news with my husband.
But when I told the man who supposedly loved me more than life itself that I was pregnant, he didn’t react the way I’d imagined.
Not even close. Instead, he let out this cold, bitter laugh.
“So you’re gonna cheat on me and then act all excited about it? Should I give you a round of applause or something p>
“Maybe I’ve been too good to you all these years. Is that why you think you can just waltz in here and expect me to raise a bastard p>
I stared at him, completely lost.
What the hell was he talking about?
I tried to explain, but then he slammed a piece of paper down on the coffee table.

I stared at that medical report on the table, my brain completely blank.
Damon’s face was twisted with this cruel smile, his eyes ice-cold and vicious.

“Chloe, you’re really something else. Acting all sweet and innocent while you’re screwing around behind my back p>
“I seriously underestimated you p>
I snatched up the report, and there it was in black and white,

“Chloe, haven’t I been good to you? Money, love-what haven’t I given you p>
“And this is what I get back? You sleeping around and expecting me to clean up your mess p>
His eyes were bloodshot, like he was barely holding back from completely losing it.
I grabbed his hands, desperate to make him understand.
“Damon, please believe me. This baby is yours p>
“There has to be something wrong with that test. You can’t have azoospermia p>
“Let’s go to another hospital, get a second opinion p>
Damon jerked his hands away so hard that I lost my balance and crashed to the floor.
He crouched down, grabbed my chin, and squeezed until it hurt. His voice was terrifying.
“Why are you still lying to me p>
“This test was done at Cedar-Sinai. The chief of urology did it himself. You think he screwed up p>
“So tell me what were you thinking about on your way home with that ultrasound p>
I looked up at him and saw tears streaming down his face, but he didn’t seem to notice. He just kept going.
“Were you thinking about how you finally got your own kid, even if it’s not mine p>
“Or were you planning how to lie to me? How to cover this up p>
“Or maybe you were thinking about your boyfriend. How happy he’d be that you’re having his baby p>
His grip on my chin got tighter and tighter until I couldn’t help but cry out.
Hearing me in pain actually made him smile.
“Does it hurt? That’s not even a fraction of what I’m feeling right now p>
“I know you want kids. I told you we could adopt p>
“So why… why did you have to hurt me like this p>
Damon had always treated me like I was made of glass. I’d never seen this side of him before.
Tears were pouring down my face as I tried to get through to him.
“Damon, you know I barely leave the house. You know everyone in my life p>
“Besides you, I don’t have anyone. How could there be another guy p>
“This baby is yours. Please believe me p>
For a second, his expression softened, like he was actually considering what I’d said.
