Percy rubbed his aching head. “Didn’t you start this mess in the first place? If you hadn’t crossed her, none of this would have happened!”
Paola froze, tears still in her eyes. Then she cried harder. “So now you’re taking her side?! We’ll be out on the streets!”
For the first time, Percy watched Paola’s hysterical outburst with a heavy heart, realizing she wasn’t as extraordinary as he’d always imagined. Her vindictive actions had stripped away any illusion of charm, leaving a bitter, unpleasant impression.
“I saw all the news reports — even the live broadcast,” he said softly. “Mom interfered unfairly to protect you, and then you tried framing Rylie. I know everything. This is our fault because you’re simply not as skilled as she is.”
Paola’s anger flared, and she slapped him across the face. “Shut up! I’m no less capable than anyone! How dare you compare me to Rylie!”
Immediately after striking Percy, regret washed over Paola. Percy stood motionless, his face turned away. He had always trusted and protected his sister without question. But now, seeing her clearly, he realized his unconditional loyalty had led him straight into manipulation and betrayal by his own family.
“Percy,” Paola began, panic creeping into her voice, but Percy cut her off by pushing her out of the room.
Left standing alone in the cold corridor, Paola’s expression twisted into resentment. Her eyes blazed with hostility as she stared toward Rylie’s room at the hallway’s far end. A promise of vengeance formed within her — she wouldn’t let Rylie off easily!
For a brief moment, tranquility returned to Rylie’s life — until Britton uncovered Black Tiger’s latest movements. Another shipment was scheduled for trade at the Crolens casino, likely the last batch from Rylie’s stolen cargo.
That evening, Rylie swiftly prepared herself.
Returning to her modest home in the community near the military compound, she activated a concealed panel on the wall, revealing a hidden cache of weapons.
Dressed elegantly in a stunning red gown with a daring slit, Rylie discreetly secured weapons around her body. After ensuring everything was well concealed, she picked up her chic handbag and exited her room.
The sensor lights in the apartment building had been out for days. Her heels echoed sharply as she descended the stairs in the darkness. Unexpectedly, she recognized a familiar silhouette at the corner.
Brad stood there, wearing a black shirt with the sleeves rolled up to reveal his muscular forearms. A cigarette dangled from his fingertips, and as he sensed her approach, he lifted his gaze slightly, his eyes partially hidden beneath messy hair.
“Where are you going?”
“What are you doing here?”
Their voices clashed softly, momentarily overlapping before falling into silence. Rylie was the first to speak again, her voice casual.
“I’m heading to a friend’s party.”
Brad extinguished his cigarette against the windowsill and faced her fully. “I happen to be free. Mind if I join?”
“You weren’t invited,” Rylie replied lightly. “It wouldn’t be proper to just appear uninvited.”
