SHE got up from her kneeling position, the phone slipped off her hand and fell with a lazy thud on the bed, as she kept on screaming.

“Jesus, Jesus!” She continued screaming, her voice sharp, gged, as though the very air had betrayed her.

“What p>

She looked at him, her hand cupped over her mouth, trembling. He was now stretching, half-awake, still caught between dream and reality.

Adrian stirred and woke up, opening his eyes. Curiosity spread across his face, his brows knitting into a line of

worry.

“Jesus Christ! Adrian?” Her voice cracked, almost breaking

He sat up quickly, alarmed by the desperation in her tone.

“What is it? What is it? Why are you screaming?” He asked his voice heavy with sleep, but his eyes trying to adjust to the chaos in front of him.

She looked at him, eyes wide and glassy, her finger shaking as it pointed toward the phone lying on the bed.

“The automobile guy is pregnant for you!” she screamed, her voice sharp, filled with both disbelief and rage.

Jeez! That got Adrian.

Sleep completely and immediately eluded him as he sprang up, his breath catching in his throat. His eyes darted toward the phone still lying there, its dark screen almost mocking him. His chest rose and fell rapidly.

He couldn’t say a word.

He couldn’t say anything.

He was speechless.

His lips parted, but no sound came out. His throat locked up as though guilt itself had wrapped chains around it. He just looked on, shame painted across his face, his eyes betraying everything his silence was trying to cover.

Amelia’s knees weakened. She gripped the edge of the bedframe, her knuckles white, her eyes never leaving his. The room was suddenly too small, the air too thick, the morning light spilling through the curtains felt like a cruel spotlight on them both.

Her breathing grew shallow, her heart racing, while Adrian’s silence echoed louder than any confession.

Vivian already knowing what she had done, and expecting Adrian to show up any minute from now, was in her room. She had been restless, her body still, but her ears pricked and her chest tight, patiently waiting for his bang on the door.

Truly, like a few hours after the call, she heard it. The sound was so loud, so troubling, it rattled her chest. Even though she had been expecting it, the force of it startled her She quickly ran to open the door, her fingers fumbling over the lock.

The moment it cracked open, Adrian barged in. His presence filled the space like a storm. She flinched backwards immediately, scuttling as she moved away from him in fear backing farther into the living room, away from the door, away from him. He didn’t care to close it behind him. He just advanced, his steps heavy, his jaw clenched, beads of sweat trickling down his handsome but thunderous face.

Vivian stopped in the middle of the room, panic-stricken. Her mouth wobbled as if to say something, but nothing came out. She was soaked in fear and uncertainty, her confidence from earlier now cracked like thin glass.

“What the hell?” Adrian finally let out, his voice thick with rage. “What was that p>

“Babe, I…” her lips trembled.

“How many times?” He cut in, his voice roaring. “How many times have I told you not to call me in the morning?” His voice thundered on the ‘not’, making her cringe, folding in on herself like a scolded child. “How many times, Vivian p>

“Babe, I’m sorry,” she rushed out, hands up, pleading. “II took the test this morning and I tested positive. Babe, I panicked… I was scared p>

“You panicked? You were scared?” He advanced on her, his voice spitting fire. “That was why you had to call me at 5 a.m. in the morning p>

She shook her head desperately.

“I didn’t think she was going to take the call. I didn’t even think, babe, I was overwhelmed p>

He sighed, his hand raking through his hair, then turned and began pacing about the room like a man losing his mind.

“This is your baby, too,” she whispered.

Adrian stopped, turned sharply, eyes blazing.

“Do you have any idea what you have just done? Do you have any idea? Huh p>

She just stared at him, her lips pouty, her eyes glistening, but her tongue refusing to move.

“You have messed everything up,” Adrian hissed, his voice breaking as he pointed towards the door, as though Amelia was there. “She knows now. She knows about everything. She knows about the lies, she knows about the affair, she knows about you… and the pregnancy p>

Vivian’s brows rose, a glint of something unreadable crossing her face.

“So, what did she say?” she asked softly.

Adrian blinked, stunned.

“Seriously? What did you think she is going to say? Huh? That she is going to throw a party? She is mad, Vivian! She is devastated, she is heartbroken.” His voice cracked at the last word.

Vivian tilted her head slightly, her tone defensive, almost childlike.

“So what, you are just going to get mad at me for getting pregnant p>

He began pacing again, his hands on his hips, his head tilted back in sheer frustration.

“Vivian, I… I told you not to call me. I told you, several times p>

“But I didn’t get pregnant alone,” she fired back, her voice rising, though still shaky, “I didn’t. I didn’t even ask

for p>

“It wasn’t supposed to get this far!” he screamed, the sour vibrating through the walls. She flinched again, her whole body recoiling like she had been struck. “Never p>

The house fell into a suffocating silence, broken only by the sound of his heavy breathing. Vivian stood still, her face pale, her lips pressed tight, looking like a sacrificial lab led to the altar. Her eyes searched his face,

desperate for softness, for anything, but she found none.

Finally, she asked, her voice low and trembling:

“So… so, what do we do now p>

Adrian looked at her. His chest still heaving, his eyes still wild. He had no words. No answers. His silence was louder than his shouting had been.

And Vivian, standing there in that thick, breathless air understood for the first time that even she had no control over what she had set in motion.
