A chill crept into Rebekah’s heart, followed by a bitter laugh. Her disappointment hadn’t come from a single incident but had been built up, layer by painful layer.
She spoke with a heavy heart. “Shawn, listen to me. Whether last night happened or not, I was always going to divorce your father p>
Seeing his stunned expression, her resolve softened, and she sighed. His wide, teary eyes reminded her of when he was a baby, and she couldn’t stop herself from giving him one last piece of advice. “Your system is quite sensitive, so just be mindful of what you eat p>
Her voice was soft, her brows gently arched over her pale skin. She had a classic elegance, and as she spoke to Shawn with such tenderness, she looked as delicate as a watercolor portrait.
“And one more thing,” Rebekah paused, forcing a smile. “I won’t be around to look after you anymore. You have to take care of yourself p>
Shawn’s eyes widened in disbelief. His mom was abandoning him? How could she? She really was that petty!
“It’s your duty to raise me!” he cried, his cheeks puffed out in anger. “If you don’t do your duty, I’ll report you! And then… then I’ll have Aunt Candice be my mom p>
Rebekah almost wanted to laugh, the irony tasting like ash in her mouth. When had the son she’d carried for ten months become this person? To him, her care had become a cage, while Candice’s indulgence represented freedom.
“Do as you wish,” Rebekah said with a light, dismissive laugh. She rose from the sofa, the slim-fitting dress accentuating her slender waist.
Shawn was so angry he was on the verge of tears, biting his lip to hold them back. But deep down, a frantic panic was taking hold. As he watched Rebekah walk toward the door, he instinctively started to follow, only to be held back by Candice.
She ruffled his hair with a grin. “Don’t worry, your mom’s just throwing a little fit. A bit of sweet-talking and she’ll be back p>
“She’s just being dramatic,” Candice added. “Besides, is it so bad if she leaves? From now on, you can have me as your godmother! One godmother is worth two of her p>
Her cheerful words lifted Shawn’s spirits, and he threw his arms around her. “That’s great! I have a godmother now p>

A bitter thought crossed Shawn’s mind: with a woman as worldly and refined as Candice around, what use was a mother anyway? Even if that woman came back begging, he would never forgive her.
He’d just wait until she came crawling back, filled with regret, only to see him, his dad, and his godmother living happily as a perfect family. Then she’d be the one left
crying.
Rebekah waited for two days, but there was no word from Benjamin. Her texts went unanswered, disappearing into a digital void. She frowned, a growing sense of irritation bubbling up inside her.

With his silver hair falling across his forehead, his refined aura made the modest car seem like a luxury vehicle. The look he gave her was tinged with a soft, lingering warmth.
Rebekah slid into the seat, gracefully avoiding his gaze. The interior was immaculate, still carrying the scent of a new car. Could a car that was several years old still seem this new? It was odd, but she didn’t press the issue.
