Chapter 43
Benjamin was taken aback by her sharp retort. For a fleeting moment, he felt a pang of guilt.
It was true. His grandfather had just been diagnosed with a terminal illness, and they had been dancing in the living room. It was wrong.
But in his mind, Rebekah deliberately fainting at the door to win his grandfather’s sympathy and get Candice in trouble was far worse.
His face hardened. “Don’t try to turn this around on me, Rebekah. Apologize to Candice p>
Rebekah’s head was throbbing, and she felt too dizzy to argue. “Think whatever you want. I’m not apologizing. Now get out p>
Benjamin’s expression darkened instantly. He was about to step forward and force the issue when Candice pulled him back.
“Let it go, Benjamin,” she said softly. “My sister just misunderstands our relationship. She’s just jealous. I can handle a little unfairness. Don’t let me come between you two.” She paused. “My mom just texted me. I should get going p>
Benjamin shot one last glare at Rebekah before turning to Candice, his expression shifting in an instant to one of gentle concern. “You’re too kind. Your sister… she hasn’t been right in the head lately. Don’t pay her any mind. I’ll walk you out p>
“Okay p>
They left, one after the other. Shawn lingered for a moment, puffing out his cheeks and glaring at Rebekah.
She met his gaze with a cool, detached look and said nothing, simply lying back down on the bed. Seeing that she was ignoring him, Shawn grew even more frustrated. He let out a loud huff and ran off to catch up with the other two.
Lying in bed, Rebekah sighed. The biggest regret of her life was believing Benjamin when he said he loved her, marrying him, and having his child.
The thought of Old Mr. Forrester, however, brought a small measure of comfort. At least she had three more months. No, less than that now he would spend this time with him, and when the period was over, she would be free. The idea eased the ache in her heart.
She had assumed Benjamin and Shawn would take Candice all the way home and stay away from the estate for a few days. To her surprise, they only saw Candie the car, letting a driver take her home, while they themselves settled in at the estate.
After seeing their true colors, any lingering affection Rebekah might have had for them had withered
away
She didn’t want to see them, but living under the same roof made it impossible. And since Old Mr. Forrester hoped she and Benjamin would reconcile, she had no choice but to put on an act for his sake.
Later, when she went downstairs, she saw Old Mr. Forrester sitting on the sofa. He looked noticeably more frail. He was pointing a finger at Benjamin, his voice a low, stern reprimand.
Rebekah paused on the stairs, catching only fragments of the conversation.
“No matter what, Rebekah is your wife! I don’t care what your relationship with Candice is, but if you drive Rebekah away with your cruelty, you’ll regret it when she’s really gone, and it will be too late p>
