In the living room, Shawn called Benjamin and reported everything, painting Rebekah as a violent aggressor who had attacked Candice. Benjamin, furious that Rebekah would dare cause trouble even while locked up, approved of Shawn’s decision to deny her food for the day and said he would be home for lunch.
Candice was thrilled to hear Benjamin was coming back. “Shawn, it’s been a while since you’ve had my cooking, hasn’t it? How about I make lunch for you and your father today p>

Candice patted his head and went into the kitchen with a smile. As Shawn watched her moving about, an image of Rebekah in that same kitchen involuntarily surfaced in his mind. As much as he hated her nagging, he had to admit she was an amazing cook and had never neglected him when it came to food.
A strange pang of guilt pricked his conscience. Mom hadn’t eaten breakfast, and it was almost noon. Was she hungry?
He quickly shook the thought away. Why should he care if she was hungry? She deserved to be punished for what she did to Ms. Candice. Satisfied with that justification, he turned his attention back to the television.
When Benjamin arrived, Candice had a full meal ready. “Benjamin, you’re back! I cooked lunch today, so I hope you’ll enjoy it,” she said, greeting him casually.
Benjamin felt a disorienting sense of déjà vu. Back when things were good between him and Rebekah, she would always have dinner waiting for him. The weariness from his day at the office would melt away the moment he smelled the warm, home- cooked food. Rebekah would have his slippers ready, hang up his suit jacket, and prepare a table full of his and Shawn’s favorite dishes. After putting Shawn to bed, she would run him a bath, and sometimes, he would pull her in to join him p>

He snapped out of his reverie and looked at Candice, forcing a smile. “Of course p>
Shawn ran to his side and pulled him toward the dining room. “Dad, come see! Mom made a ton of food for us p>
“Mom?” Benjamin asked, his brow furrowing.
“You said I should accept Ms. Candice as my godmother, didn’t you?” Shawn explained brightly. “So now she’s my godmom p>
Benjamin’s gaze shifted to Candice. She simply smiled, nodded, and took his arm, guiding him to a seat at the table. “Shawn told me what you said. If you don’t want to be with me! dont mind just being his godmother p>
“That’s not it, I Benjamin began, wanting to defend himself. It wasn’t
that he didn’t like Candice, but he felt a sense of responsibility toward Rebekah.
