Chapter 168
Athena’s POV
70
I started working on the bolt behind my right wrist, using my fingernails to scrape away the old mortar and concrete even though it was making my fingers bleed and every movement sent pain shooting up my arm.
It was slow work and I had to stop every few minutes to listen for footsteps on the stairs but it was better than sitting here doing nothing and waiting
for whatever Daxon had planned next.
The wolfsbane was making me dizzy and nauseous but I forced myself to keep working because I knew that if I stopped now I might not have the
strength to start again.
My wolf was fighting the effects of the drug and lending me what power she could but it wasn’t enough and I could feel myself getting weaker with
every breath I took.
I thought about Tristan and how he must be feeling right now if he had discovered I was missing and couldn’t feel me through our bond.
I thought about how panicked and angry he would be and how he would probably do something stupid and dangerous to try to find me.
I thought about Orion and how he would blame himself for not being there to protect me and how Sarah would be worried sick and trying to keep the
children calm.
The thoughts made me work harder at the bolt even though my fingers were raw and bleeding now and the pain was making me see stars.
I had to get out of here before they found me because I knew them well enough to know that they would come looking no matter how dangerous it was
and no matter what the cost might be.
That was just who they were and it was one of the things I loved most about them but it was also what was going to get them killed if I couldn’t find a way to warn them or escape before they walked into Daxon’s trap.
The bolt was starting to feel looser under my fingers and I could see small pieces of concrete falling to the floor when I worked at it.
It was going to take hours and maybe days but it was possible and that gave me hope for the first time since I had woken up in this basement.
I just had to stay alive long enough to make it work and I had to pray that Tristan would be smart enough to wait for backup instead of coming after me
alone like the hero he always tried to be.
Because if he came alone, we were both going to die in this place and Daxon was going to win everything he had ever wanted from the very beginning.
Hours passed and my fingers were completely numb from scraping against the concrete but the bolt was definitely getting looser and I could wiggle it
back and forth now when I worked at it.
The problem was that even if I got it completely free from the wall, the chain was still locked around my wrist and there was no way I was going to be able to slip my hand through it without breaking something.
I looked at my wrist and tried to figure out the best way to do this without causing permanent damage but I knew there wasn’t going to be a good way and I was going to have to choose between breaking my wrist or staying chained up here until Daxon came back to kill me and everyone I loved.
The choice was pretty obvious when I put it like that.

Chapter 168
570
I needed something to make my wrist slippery so I could try to force it through the chain even if it meant breaking bones in the process and I spit on
my hand and rubbed the saliva all over my wrist and hand until it was as wet and slippery as I could make it.
