Chapter 20
Kyrell’s POV
“How dare you!” I growled in anger as my eyes darkened in rage. My wolf prowled inside him in anger as I felt him almost close and tethering to the surface.
How could they go behind my back to make decisions for me? How dare they play jury over my life?
“Who gave any of you that right? You want to repeat the same arrangements that you all had made when you forced me to get married to Natalia?” I growled bitterly. I felt betrayed by my own people.
“We wouldn’t be having this conversation if you had done the necessary thing, My Lord. This issue concerns everyone seated here, including you p>
“Do you really have to force him?” Conrad, my father’s Beta spoke up for the very first time that evening.
“He simply isn’t interested in fathering an heir. I believe that it is inhumane for us to force our wishes on him. He is not only the Lycan king of this pack but our leader as well. I for one, will support whatever you decide, My Lord.” He inclined his head slightly to pledge his allegiance but I could see right past his smile. It was nothing but a facade.
“This meeting is over!” I rose to my feet “I do not wish to speak about this matter ever again!” I warned them sternly before storming out of the courtroom.
I walked towards the path that led to the tower’s garden, and the minute I arrived, I was approached by Moira who had been cleaning up the place before I interrupted her with my presence.
“Is everything okay, My Lord?” She had asked when she got closer to where I stood. My eyes were fixed on the flowers in front of me but my mind had already wandered far.
“I am not in the least okay Moira.” I replied after a brief silence. “The council are asking me to get married again but I don’t want to. I do not want to get married.” I repeated with a scrunched face, the words tasting bitter on my tongue.
I heard Moira sigh. I had expected that sort of reaction from her. She was the only one apart from Declan who knew the reason behind my decision.
She was also the only one who knew in detail why I didn’t want to go through with it. Even Declan was kept in the dark about it.
“The council is only asking you to fulfill your duties as their leader, Kyrell.” She touched my arm. “They are simply asking you to follow the tradition p>
“The same tradition that was made by my father and his fathers before him?” I threw her a challenging look, my jaw ticked in rage.
“The same tradition that killed my mother and rendered me useless? You are asking me to follow that tradition?” I blurted out in pure agony and hurt. The pain I felt at that moment ran deep inside my bones.
“You amongst everyone is well aware of what that same tradition has done to me. I have lost a whole lot of people because of that stupid tradition. I have lost my sanity, my life, my sleep and myself in the process Moira.” I yanked my hands away from her grip and took a step forward.
“I understand what you are going through Kyrell.” She started towards me.
“I watched you grow up into the man you are now. I know just how much this has affected you but you cannot deny the fact that they are only concerned about your future p>
“Your mother prayed desperately to the goddess to have you. Your second mother crawled just so you could walk. She was insulted and received a lot of backlash from her fellow wives just so that you can be where you are now. Do not let their struggles be in vain.” She advised me.
“Think about what they had said and make up your mind. You of all people should’ve known that this day would surely come p>
I did know that this day would come but what I didn’t know is the fact that it would come so quickly.
They didn’t even give me a chance to gather myself after Natalia’s death and now I’m tasked with this rubbish.
“My Lord!” Declan’s domineering voice broke the sudden silence that had enveloped them.
“Leave us Moira.” I ordered and she immediately took to her heels.
“What have you decided?” Declan asked and I turned to face him. The frown on my face was evident as I glared at him.
“I am not going to do it.” Came my quick response.
“But the council p>
“Do you think that I care what they of anyone think?” I cut him short “I have never cared before and I don’t plan on doing so now p>
“My Lord, if you refuse to do this, you are not only putting your position in danger but your people as well.” He addressed me.
“I have a feeling that Conrad is up to no good. He must’ve have started the agenda for this meeting and the only way you can secure your pack and protect your people is to have as many allies as possible, along with an heir and you can only do that with the help of this marriage p>
“Think of it as a necessity to achieve your goals. Conrad might not give up, but he will definitely back down and give us enough time to figure out exactly what he is up to p>
I breathed heavily. This wasn’t exactly how I wanted my evening to go. The council had not only ruined my mood and now this? Just how much were they planning on taking from me? Just how much do they want me to give?
“I have found a woman from a good clan and I want to form an alliance with them. It’s up to you to decide, My Lord if you want to go through with this or face the unpleasant music from the council which might not be favorable p>
“It’s your call but I will stand with whatever you decide to do.” He added with a placating smile while I did nothing but look on with my mind lost in thought.
