Phoebe’s POV
Apart from staying in my suite all day, nothing much happened after former Luna Catherine had that little ’chat’ with me.
I spent most of the time immersing myself in books about the pack and noble practices as well, and also a little about the emergence of the first Hunters a few centuries ago.
It was amazing to imagine how humans could have the power to threaten the lives of every supernatural being on the planet by simply making the right tools.
Anyway, when I glanced outside, I realized that it was already evening.
The shawarma Beta Negan had given me hours ago just wasn’t enough and now I was starving all over again.
“I guess I’ll have no choice but to step out of this suite,” I muttered to myself, getting up and stretching.
However, when I got to the suite door, I tensed up when I realized that going to have dinner would potentially mean meeting Kaene there.
I gulped, drawing in a deep breath before I stepped out.
When I got outside, however, it didn’t take long to notice something off.
I glanced at two maids standing in a corner, whispering to themselves about something.
Curious, I relied on my enhanced werewolf hearing to listen to their conversation.
“I heard the Alpha rejected her in the presence of the elites.” One muttered, sounding excited.
“That’s nothing. I heard that there’s a new Moon’s Chosen ceremony being planned and that the former candidates are coming in to see who the moon goddess will use to replace that slut.” The other one said with certainty in her voice.
I dimmed my eyes not because of what they said, but because one of them called me a ’slut p>
Where was this coming from?
I thought Kaene warned that information about the footage shouldn’t be leaked out.
My fists subconsciously clenched as I remained hidden behind a pillar in the hallway, trying to hear more.
“Well, I don’t think she can be replaced. Except, they kill her, of course.” One of the maids sniggered, her eyes widening soon after. “Wait a minute. You don’t think they’ll plan to… Kill her, right p>
My heart sank at the thought, and my breathing also increased.
Would Kaene be that desperate to break the mate bond? Would he be that desperate to get rid of me?
“Girl, I don’t know, but if she mysteriously gets ’missing’ one of these days, I guess then we’ll know what happened.” The other maid burst into laughter and her friend soon followed.
I was just about to get out of my hiding position and confront them when a voice echoed from behind me.
“Ma’am, are you okay p>
I jolted, turning back only to see Brittany, my new maid, standing there with a curious expression on her face.
Shit.
I turned my gaze back to the maids and realized that they’d noticed us and stopped talking.
They tried pretending like they couldn’t see me until I decided to waltz toward them.
“Hey!” I snapped, gritting my teeth while trying to hold back my wolf. “You girls think I didn’t hear all that p>
They both glanced at themselves but didn’t seem remorseful. Not even slightly.
“Pardon our… Rash words, Luna.” One of them bowed slightly, tucking her hair back with a sly smirk on her face. “By the way, can we still call you ’Luna’ right now? No offense, but I don’t think the Alpha would want a cheating Luna p>
What. The. Fuck p>
My eyes flared up as I walked up to the girl and held her by the wrist, forcing her to gasp and look at me.
“Now listen here, you lowly excuse for a bully. Regardless of what titles I may or may not have, I wouldn’t take being insulted lightly.” I hissed.
But she stood her ground, struggling to release herself from my grip. “Let go of me. I… I was merely asking a constructive question p>
Meanwhile, her friend who stood beside her growled. “Don’t be afraid of her, Aisha! Didn’t you hear the news that she’s nothing more than a regular citizen? The Alpha is only keeping her behind to save his crumbling reputation p>
Dearie me, the nerves!
I glared at the maid who just spoke and was about to rant at her as well when Aisha successfully yanked her hand out of my hold.
She proceeded to shove me on my shoulder, forcing me to take two steps back while I gawked at her in shock.
The adrenaline rush I got from the encounter was almost crippling, causing me to breathe heavily in a bid to calm myself.
This couldn’t be happening.
If someone had told me a few days back that I would be in this situation, I wouldn’t have believed it.
Okay, now that I think about it… Maybe I would’ve.
They tried their best to hide it, but I knew all these maids were jealous of me and how I ’miraculously’ became the Moon’s Chosen and the Luna.
Many of them have been here for months and even years before me, but yet it was I, the newcomer, who the Moon goddess happened to pick.
And to make matters worse, they probably saw me as a fool now that they found out I’d blown that all away by sleeping with the Beta.
But none of them will ever understand.
“How dare you push me?” I snapped at the maid who did that, glaring at her viciously.
It was time I stopped relying on my position and started doing things the old-fashioned way.
Before the maid could reply, I sent a punch at her face, backed by the strength of my wolf.
However, just when the punch had successfully landed on her face and I was about to give her another one, her friend stepped in.
“Leave her alone, you slut!” She exclaimed.
Before I knew what was happening, I heard the sound of a vase breaking, followed by a sharp pain assaulting the back of my head.
The world around me began spinning as I staggered, touching the back of my head.
Blood.
Before I passed out, I caught a glimpse of a woman in a flowy green gown advancing toward the scene, but before I could see her face, everything went black.
