Monty looked at Calliope with hopeful eyes, desperate for her to step in.
Calliope’s beautiful face remained unreadable. She replied, cool as ice, “Mr. Jewell, there’s no blood between us. And whatever bond we might’ve had, you and your family burned through it a long time ago. Even if you all dropped dead right now, I wouldn’t feel a damn thing p>
“So, don’t bother begging me p>
“Go find someone else to help you p>
“And for the record, I haven’t done anything to you. Everything that’s happened to you, you brought on yourselves. What do you even mean, ‘give you a break p>
Calliope let out a cold, dismissive laugh. “If I was actually out to get you, you wouldn’t even be standing here to beg. You’d be six feet under by now p>
Her eyes were icy, almost frightening.
Monty met her gaze for a second, swallowed hard, and looked away, a chill running down his spine.
Calliope turned and walked into the hospital room.
Inside, she found Ulysses arguing with Zelda.
“Zelda, do you seriously not realize you’re in the wrong here p>
“Get out. You’re not my mom, and I’m not your son. I don’t need you in my life p>
“Uly, have you lost your mind? That witch-she must’ve bribed you, right? What did she give you, huh? Why are you turning your back on your own mother p>
“Uly, I’m your mom! How can you pretend like I don’t exist p>
“Your mom loves you, right p>
“Calliope is poison, she’s the reason our family’s a mess, the reason we’re falling apart! You have to stay away from her p>
“Look at you, hurt because of her, and she hasn’t even tried to help us p>
“She doesn’t feel one ounce of guilt p>
Ulysses stared at Zelda, disbelief in his eyes. “Shouldn’t you be the one feeling guilty p>
“Zelda, have you forgotten how we treated Callie? How you treated her? Or do you just not care p>
“I’m never coming back to the Jewell family. I have nothing to do with you anymore p>
“Ulysses, don’t you dare talk to me like that!” Zelda snapped, her voice shrill.
Ulysses’ voice was cold. “I don’t
want anything more to do with you people unless you can admit you were wrong and actually make right.”. s
“That’s never going to happen. We didn’t do anything wrong!” Zelda snapped, her face red with anger.
“Fine, then. I’m done. I don’t need family like you p>
As Ulysses spoke, he noticed Calliope standing in the doorway. He steadied himself and said, “Callie… I’m sorry p>
“No need to apologize,” Calliope replied calmly. “I just wanted to let you know I’m leaving p>
“Alright. Head on home.” Ulysses smiled at her from his hospital bed.
Calliope barely glanced at Zelda, then walked out of the room without another word.
She left the hospital with Mavis and Portia.
The three of them discussed what had happened as they walked to the car.
Calliope admitted she had no clue who the guy with the knife was. He didn’t seem like some random & psycho- she got the feeling he was there for her, specifically. s
“Did you piss anyone off lately?” Portia asked.
Calliope shook her head. “Not that I know of p>
“The Jewell family, maybe?” Portia mused. “Honestly, I wouldn’t put it past them especially Lisette. Heard she’s in deep trouble right now, drowning in debt, and the whole Jewell clan wants her out on the street.” s
