“Drive faster, Maxwell!” Chris exclaimed, his voice cracking like a whip. Maxwell jammed his foot down on the gas pedal, and the car tore down the street, a blur of red taillights fading into the night.
Back at the apartment, Chris pushed open the door to Maia’s room and carefully lowered her onto the bed.
