Gordon cleared his throat. “Mom, was there something you wanted to talk to me about p>
“I wanted to ask how things are going between you and Catie.” Beatrice plopped herself down in front of him, resting her chin in her hands. “Gordon, I really like Catie. I mean, really like her. I’ve already decided she’s going to be my daughter- in-law p>
“Oh.” Gordon’s tone was flat.
“Oh? That’s all you have to say? I’m asking you a question! Are you pursuing Catie or not p>
“Mom,” Gordon said, his voice even and casual, as if the whole topic bored him, “don’t play matchmaker. Catie and I are just friends p>
“Do you even realize you’re setting yourself up to lose her?” Beatrice huffed, exasperated.
A faint smile flickered at the corner of Gordon’s mouth. “Chasing after her p>
“Mom, you’re overthinking it p>
He had no intention of chasing anyone.
Not now, not ever.
Beatrice gave up on arguing, her attention drifting to his bookshelf-where her eyes landed on a thick cookbook. “The Complete Guide to Home Cooking’? Gordon, I thought you said your office was your battlefield. Huh, interesting. So quick to contradict yourself. Tell me, are you learning to cook just for Catie p>
Her eyes sparkled as if she’d uncovered some grand secret.
Gordon’s expression didn’t change. “That? It’s Skyler’s p>
He picked up a file and began leafing through it. “Mom, have you just met me? Why would I learn to cook for a girl p>

Beatrice shot him a look, spun on her heel, and left-snatching up the fruit platter she’d just brought in as she went.
Gordon had been about to grab a slice of watermelon when his mother whisked the plate away. “Mom, weren’t you bringing me fruit p>
Beatrice, still fuming, snapped, “An old bachelor like you doesn’t deserve fruit I prepared myself p>

As if being single wasn’t enough—did she have to stick “old” in front of it?
He wasn’t old. Not yet thirty!
Gordon felt a little put out.

Just then, his phone vibrated.
He picked it up.
A WhatsApp notification.
Gordon glanced at the date-25th. Tomorrow was the 26th.
He remembered he and Caitlin had planned to have dinner together on the 26th.

The message was probably from Caitlin.
She must be texting about their dinner plans.
He opened WhatsApp right away.
