By the end, Yara was teetering on the edge of a breakdown.
She was in agony.
Even now, she couldn’t bring herself to face her son’s death. Just this morning, her boy had been perfectly fine. How could he be gone, just like that?
As Yara spoke, Keira staggered backward, nearly losing her balance. She never would have imagined Ann would do something so reckless—so utterly thoughtless! Harlan was the center of Liam Somerset’s and Yara’s lives. How could Ann possibly have stopped the Somersets from taking Harlan to the hospital?
Keira felt faint, and probably would have collapsed if Caitlin hadn’t caught her in time. “Careful, Grandma,” Caitlin murmured, steadying her.
Clutching Caitlin’s hand, Keira tried to collect herself. No wonder, she thought. No wonder Yara had flown into such a rage at Ann. Now it all made sense. Ann had actually done something like this.
Keira knew pain herself, and she could understand Yara’s grief all too well.
Yara looked at Caitlin, her voice pleading, “Miss Gonzales, I’m begging you- please, go to the hospital and see Harlan. He always liked you so much. It was me-I was the foolish one, it’s all my fault p>
Caitlin nodded gently, her expression heavy. “I’ll go see Harlan at the hospital p>
Before long, a pair of officers arrived and led Yara away to the interrogation room. Once Caitlin and Keira finished giving their statements, they headed straight to the hospital.
Amanda was still waiting anxiously outside the emergency room doors. Keira hurried over. “Amanda, how’s Ann p>
“The doctor said they’re still trying to save her,” Amanda replied, tears streaming down her face.
Keira pressed on, “Have you notified Gavin p>
Gavin Templeton had gone back to his hometown a few days ago to visit family graves. Amanda and Ann had stayed behind-they thought it was too cold there.
Amanda nodded. “Gavin’s already on his way back p>
Her voice trembled as she continued, “Mom, the Somersets are just heartless. How could they do this to Ann? We have to get the best lawyer possible. I want Yara in prison for the rest of her life p>
Keira’s expression darkened. “Do you even realize that Harlan is dead p>
Amanda froze.
What?
Harlan was dead? How could that be?
A moment later, Amanda snapped, “And what does Harlan’s death have to do with
my Ann? So her son died, and now she gets to take it out on someone else’s daughter p>
Keira’s face grew stern. “Tell me did you know that Ann gave Yara the Heartsteady Elixir? Did you know Ann tried to stop the Somersets from taking Harlan to the hospital p>
“Harlan died because he wasn’t taken to the hospital in time. That’s why he’s gone p>
In other words, Ann was an indirect cause of his death.
Amanda was stunned. Now it made sense-no wonder Yara had lost control.
But she quickly composed herself. “Sure, Ann gave her the Heartsteady Elixir, but that’s not poison! It’s supposed to help the heart, not harm it. How is this Ann’s fault? Ann isn’t a Somerset-if they really wanted to take Harlan to the hospital, could she have stopped them? What power would she possibly have?” Amanda narrowed her eyes, her tone sharp. “The police are right here-let them investigate. Let them check if there’s anything wrong with the Heartsteady Elixir, and whether Ann’s had any contact with the Somersets these past few days.” “They lost someone, and now they want to blame it all on Ann? Not a chance.” Amanda didn’t know exactly why Harlan had died, but she was determined to keep her daughter’s name clear.
She’d admit to the Heartsteady Elixir-but nothing else. Not another word.
Keira rubbed her temples, a headache coming on. “Amanda, you’re not a child anymore. How could you let Ann get involved in something this serious? This is a matter of life and death p>
Amanda’s voice was thick with grievance. “Mom, Ann only gave them the Heartsteady Elixir out of kindness. How could she have known the Somersets wouldn’t take Harlan to the hospital? What parents don’t take their sick child to the hospital? That’s their negligence, not Ann’s p>
And besides, Caitlin had gotten involved too! But now, Keira didn’t even mention Caitlin’s name—she just wanted to pin everything on Ann.
If Caitlin hadn’t meddled and told the Somersets to take Harlan to the hospital,
Ann never would have given Yara the Heartsteady Elixir in the first place.
If anyone was to blame, Caitlin was the real culprit.
Just as her daughter had said, in Keira’s eyes, no matter how remarkable Ann
was, she’d never measure up to Caitlin.
