“Catie, why aren’t you saying anything p>
“Why won’t you talk to me p>
“You’re not even talking to me because of him p>
So hurt. So sad. So wronged.
The more Gordon thought about it, the more miserable he felt. He grabbed another bottle of beer and took a deep swig. When he set the empty bottle down, he accidentally knocked over the lemon on the table.
It tumbled and rolled right under the couch.
Gordon scrambled off the sofa and knelt down, peering at the lemon with drunken seriousness. “Catie, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. I swear, I’m not a violent guy-I promise, I’m really not p>
To emphasize his point, he held up three fingers in a solemn oath.
“Don’t be mad, Catie. I’ll pick you up right now p>
He retrieved the lemon, set it gently back on the table, then thoughtfully draped a blanket over it as if tucking it in for the night. After making sure the lemon was snug, Gordon flopped back onto the couch.
He lay there for a while, then suddenly rolled over, glancing at the lemon with red- rimmed eyes. “Catie, I’m mad at you now. I’m never going to talk to you again p>
And with that, he drifted off into a boozy sleep.
Meanwhile
Farrell walked Caitlin to the gates of the villa.
Caitlin stepped out of the car and opened the gate. “Thank you, Mr. Ryan. You don’t have to see me any further p>
Farrell got out as well. “I should be the one thanking you, Miss Kensington. If it hadn’t been for you last night, I would’ve been in real trouble. Thank you for coming to my rescue p>
Low blood sugar wasn’t much of a problem, but if he’d actually passed out, that would’ve been another story entirely.
Caitlin smiled faintly. “You already took me out to dinner, Mr. Ryan. We’re even now. You don’t have to keep bringing it up p>
Farrell looked at her, grinning. “Miss Kensington, you’re refreshingly straightforward. So, next time we meet, we’ll be friends p>
She nodded. “Yes. I’m heading in now, Mr. Ryan p>
“Of course,” Farrell replied with a warm smile. “Until we meet again, then p>
“Until we meet again p>
Caitlin turned and walked up the path toward the house.
Farrell got back in his car.
He didn’t realize until he’d driven a ways down the road that he didn’t actually have Caitlin’s number. He picked up his phone, intent on sending her a WhatsApp message, only to discover her contact wasn’t there.
He chuckled softly.
Women were always the first to add him on WhatsApp. He’d just assumed Caitlin had done the same, but thinking back, she hadn’t asked for his number at all during their dinner.
This was a first.
He came from a good family, was accomplished, highly educated, and stood out from the crowd. Women flocked to him wherever he went. His WhatsApp was full
of beautiful women-always the ones reaching out to him first.
But today?
He’d met an exception.
Caitlin hadn’t even tried to add him on WhatsApp.
A smile tugged at Farrell’s lips. “Interesting p>
She was interesting.
This whole situation was interesting.
Very interesting.
BEEP BEEP BEEP-
Suddenly, his car’s quiet interior was filled with the sound of his ringtone.
Farrell answered the call from the steering wheel.
“Hi, Grandma p>
Whatever she said on the other end made his brow crease. He sounded a little impatient. “I don’t care about Miss Gonzales or Miss Prescott. I’m not coming back to the Capital, and I’m not meeting her. Please, stop trying to set me up p>
