Although Brock’s condition was urgent, a day or two wouldn’t make a critical difference. Caitlin was exhausted from the long journey, and rest was her top priority.

The man immediately bowed to them. “Miss Gonzales, Miss Hayes, it is a pleasure. My name is Hardy, and I will be your personal butler during your stay. If you need anything at all, please do not hesitate to contact me.” He presented them with his business cards. “You can reach me using the internal line on your bedside phone, or if you are out of the hotel, you may call the number on this card p>
“Thank you,” Caitlin and Celeste said, accepting the cards.
The Grand Patrin had an exclusive elevator for its aristocratic guests. Hardy led them around a corner to a private, quiet lift, a stark contrast to the busy public elevators.
Celia had arranged for them to stay in a deluxe suite on the top floor-the 78th floor. The view was breathtaking. Standing before the floor-to-ceiling windows, they could see the entire city spread out below them.
Celia did a quick inspection of the suite’s amenities. Satisfied, she turned to leave. “Freya, March, I’ll let you two get some rest. I’ll see you tomorrow p>

Once Celia had gone, Celeste flopped onto the enormous, plush bed. “Catie, let’s rest this morning and go exploring this afternoon. This is my first time in Valerium p>
“Okay,” Caitlin agreed. Although she had been to Valerium many times in her past life, it had always been for work. She had never had the chance to properly explore the city.
They slept for seven hours, waking up around one in the afternoon. Celeste had packed an assortment of pretty dresses and was holding them up against herself. “Catie, which one looks better, the blue or the pink p>

When Celeste emerged from the bathroom in her new dress, Caitlin had just finished getting ready herself. “March, let’s go p>
Celeste’s eyes widened. “Wow, Catie, you look so cool in that utility-style outfit p>
Caitlin was wearing a white camisole under a cropped, army-green button-up shirt, revealing a sliver of her toned midriff. She paired it with matching cargo pants and black combat boots, which made her legs look impossibly long and straight. She was a walking mannequin.
Caitlin smiled. “And you look very sweet in that dress p>
Celeste linked her arm through Caitlin’s. “We’re a perfect pair-one cool, one sweet. We’re made for each other.” Caitlin nodded in agreement.
Chatting animatedly, they made their way to the elevator. The hotel opened directly onto one of Clayton’s most bustling streets. Celeste was snapping photos of everything while Caitlin sent a quick picture to Gordon Sylvester.
Gordon, as always, replied instantly.

Caitlin continued to send him photos from each landmark they passed, and he replied to every single one. Then she realized something off According to the time back home, it was just after four inthe morning. Didn’t he sleep?

Putting her phone away, Caitlin noticed Celeste was also engrossed in a text conversation, smiling to herself. As Caitlin was about to say something, she saw a car speeding toward them from the opposite side of the street.
Pedestrians scrambled out of the way, but a small child, no more than three or four years old, remained in the middle of the road, happily licking a lollipop.
The SUV had a significant blind spot; from the driver’s perspective, the child was completely invisible. And the car wasn’t slowing down.
The child’s mother screamed in terror, “Olivia! Olivia p>
But little Olivia didn’t understand the urgency in her mother’s voice and stayed right where she was.
A man in the crowd, wearing a formal hat and holding a walking stick, narrowed his sharp eyes and was about to move when a slender figure shot past him. With incredible agility, she leaped forward, her hair creating a graceful arc in the wind. She grabbed the child’s arm, pulling her back into a protective embrace just as the little girl was registering what was happening.
It all happened in a flash. The onlookers gasped in shock.

The car sped by, its side-view mirror practically brushing against Caitlin’s back.
It had been a heart-stoppingly close call. If it weren’t for Caitlin, Olivia would have been sent flying.
