He called his assistant, and ten minutes later he had the hospital address and room number.

Mamie was slumped on a wooden bench, eyes closed, her hand pressed to her stomach. In the hospital room, the monitor sent out soft beeps every so often. She was barely sleeping at all.
So the second the door handle turned, Mamie’s eyes shot open.
Scott stood in the doorway, his gaze dropping to where her hand rested. His brow creased. “Did you eat anything p>
Mamie blinked, surprised to see him. “What are you doing here p>
“I heard from Dorothea. Something this serious, why didn’t you tell me p>
He walked over and glanced at the numbers on the monitor. “I just talked to the doctor about Josh. His heart rate and breathing are steady. Vitals look good p>
“I’ll have my assistant stay here. Let me take you to get something to eat p>
Mamie started to protest, but he cut her off. “Don’t even say you’re not hungry. Your stomach’s acting up because you haven’t eaten p>
She let out a breath and looked at the monitor again. Everything was normal.
“Alright. Thank you p>
They walked out of the room together. As the elevator doors closed, Scott spoke quietly. “Sorry if I was too blunt earlier. I wasn’t trying to scold you. I’m just worried p>
His words sent her heart skittering in her chest.
She didn’t have the energy to untangle her feelings. “I don’t blame you. Thanks for coming to see my dad p>
Scott’s lips pressed into a thin line. “We agreed to be a couple, right? Even if it’s just for show, you can still tell me things. I don’t see it as a hassle. Stuff like this is easy for me to handle p>
He realized he was coming on too strong, so his tone softened. “It’s nice to have someone to talk things over with, isn’t it p>
Mamie lowered her head, quiet. She honestly hadn’t thought about reaching out to Scott. Notjust- because their relationship was take. Even if it was real, she probably wouldn’t have told him right away.
She’d always handled tough situations on her own. Even when she was dating Addison, she never leaned on him. Maybe that’s why Addison always felt like she didn’t need him like he was just along for s the ride. He liked the way she made him look, but in the end, all those little frustrations built up and he cheated.
Mamie’s voice was steady. “Sorry. I’ve never liked talking things over with people p>
Scott hesitated, then let it go. The elevator doors slid open.
He drove her to a small restaurant near the hospital and ordered a pot of congee and a few light dishes.
“It’s late. Something easy to digest will be better for you p>
Mamie managed a small smile. “Thanks p>
But after just a few bites, she put her chopsticks down. She couldn’t eat any more.
“If you can’t finish, it’s fine. Don’t stress about wasting food. We can take the rest to

That night, Mamie kept replaying
everything in her mind. Why had her life turned out this way? Why had she become someone else’s adopted daughter? The questions just kept building up inside her. had nobody to talk to.
