Chapter 304
After a few days of living together peacefully, Mamie started to let go of the tension she’d been holding in her heart. Most evenings after work, she’d go straight home and spend time with Garth. Even Ladd had nothing to complain about anymore.
“Scott, because of your job, I know you can’t throw a huge wedding. But after the ceremony, why don’t we invite your friends and colleagues over for a little get- together at home? You and Mamie deserve a real celebration.” Ladd suggested, trying to be helpful.
“There’s really no need,” Scott replied calmly.
“Dad, let’s not give anyone a reason to talk,” he added, looking at his father.
Ladd just felt bad for Mamie. “Alright, but I’ll make sure Mamie gets a thick red envelope,” he said, half-joking, half-serious.
When Ladd handed Mamie a bank card, she immediately tried to give it back. She didn’t even need to check-she could guess there was at least a million on it.
“Mamie, there’s ten million in here. It’s just my way of saying thank you, and sorry you have to go through all this p>
The card felt like it was burning a hole in her hand. She took it out of politeness, then, as soon as she could, walked over to Scott’s nightstand and set it down.
“This is for you. I really can’t accept it p>
Scott smiled a little. “It’s my dad’s way of showing he cares. Just keep it.” “Scott, you know with my job, I can’t take that money either p>
Mamie sighed, feeling helpless. “Fine, we’ll just save it for Garth’s future p>
Scott reached into his drawer and pulled out another card. “This one has my salary and some extra from investments. Use it for whatever we need at home. That other card, you can use for big purchases or invest it however you want. Don’t stress, my dad’s way richer than you think p>
Mamie was speechless. Who gives out a ten-million-dollar wedding gift, anyway? Of course the family was loaded.
The wedding itself was simple. Scott explained that, because of his position, they couldn’t do anything flashy or extravagant. So they held the ceremony at a private clube owned by The Stepfiens Groan, with
just thirty tables. Honestly, Mamie thought it was cozy and sweet.
Garth was over the moon about being the ring bearer again. Josh and Claire, who were both super close to Mamie, sat at the main table with her Adonis still sulking, kept a scowl on his face the entire time.
Because of Scott’s job, the guest list had to be small. None of his current coworkers could show up, but Vince a former colleague who’d move out of town-came back just for the wedding. He glanced at Mamie, grinned, and raised his glass.
“Scott, you really lucked out,” Vince said.
Scott smiled. “Glad you could make it p>
The two had been college buddies, started working together after graduation, then
gone their separate ways when Scott got promoted and Vince transferred
elsewhere. They hadn’t seen each other in five years.
Vince shook his head, half-laughing. “About time you settled down p>
Scott didn’t answer, just finished his drink.
Mamie gave Vince a polite smile, but for some reason, she didn’t like him very much. They only nodded at each other and moved on.
As they left the table, Scott leaned toward her. “You don’t like me drinking p>
“It’s fine. Today’s special,” Mamie said with a little laugh. “I don’t really have that many rules p>
Scott looked at her for a few seconds, then turned away to greet the next group. Honestly, he kind of wished Mamie would be more protective of him.
When they finally made it to the main table, Adonis was still glowering.
“I don’t care if you’re the police chief or the mayor,” Adonis said, glaring at Scott. “If you ever treat Mamie badly, you’ll have to answer to me p>
