Lily let out a mocking laugh. “You must be joking. This little girl? Even the top specialists at home and abroad couldn’t figure out what’s wrong, and you think a kid like her has the answer p>
Lilian didn’t react. She quietly sipped her soup-she was long used to this kind of doubt.
Mr. Quinton’s tone turned cold. “This matter is none of your concern. Worry about yourself p>
Lily hadn’t expected him to snap like that. She quickly softened her voice. “Darling, I only said that for Jimmy’s sake. Just think-none of the experts could help. Letting a stranger intervene might not be wise, especially after all this time.” She reached out to gently touch his hand.
Mr. Quinton pulled his hand away, dabbed his mouth with a napkin, and said flatly, “It’s settled. Don’t bring it up again.” He stood and turned to Lilian. “Lilian, take your time with breakfast. I’ll be in the study p>
Lilian nodded slightly and continued eating.
As Mr. Quinton ascended the stairs, Lily’s expression darkened. She fixed a cold stare on Lilian. “You don’t look familiar, young lady. What spell did you cast on our old man? Or are you here with another agenda p>
Lilian ignored the barking, quietly spooning more soup into her mouth.
Lily’s voice lowered, sharp and threatening. “In a place like Sandy River, if you want to live peacefully, it’s best to know your place. Stick your nose where it doesn’t belong, and you won’t even know how the fire started. Consider that a friendly warning p>
Lilian swallowed gracefully, wiped the corners of her mouth with a napkin, and gave a slight smile. “Is that so? Sounds like Madam Lily is speaking from experience. I’ll remember your kind advice. It’s just that I’m the type who walks into the tiger’s den even knowing full well what’s inside. So naturally, I’m curious-what exactly caused two members of the Lincoln family to fall into comas for three months yet still cling to life? Doesn’t that intrigue you, Madam Lily p>
Lilian’s calm, unbothered tone only enraged Lily more. After all her years as Madam Lily, no one had ever dared talk to her like this. With a snarl, she picked up a cup of coffee and flung it at Lilian.
In a flash, Lilian lifted the tablecloth. The coffee splashed back-soaking Lily instead.
Lily let out a piercing shriek. “You little bitch! I swear, if I don’t deal with you today, I’m not Lily p>
She lunged forward.
Lilian snatched a fork off the table and pinned Lily’s wrist down with cold precision. “If you reach for me again,” she said icily, “I can’t guarantee that hand will stay intact.” Then, with a flick of her wrist, she sent the fork flying-it embedded itself deep into a nearby pillar.
Lily froze, stunned.

Just then, Hugh’s voice drifted over, lazy and amused. “Miss Lilian, I must say-impressive work. Took you all of two moves to put my mother in her place. I’m impressed p>
She didn’t even slow her stride. “You’re welcome. If you’d like a taste of the fork yourself, Hugh, I’m happy to oblige p>
With that, she disappeared down the hall.
Hugh watched her go, clapping softly. “What a fascinating girl,” he murmured. “Too bad… way too spicy p>
