Victoria chuckled as she spoke, but her laughter died in her throat the moment she saw Jacob kneeling on
the floor. She instantly sensed something was terribly wrong p>
Jacob looked up at her, his eyes bloodshot, filled with a hatred usually reserved for mortal enemies.
Victoria stammered, “M-Mr. Pearson… what’s wrong p>
“Jacob, please get up. This isn’t… appropriate p>
“Someone like her… she wouldn’t have expected this p>
Before she could finish, Jacob surged up from the floor and slapped her with all his might, the sound
echoing in the room. He spoke through gritted teeth.
“That is my mother lying there p>
“My own mother p>
“You killed her p>
Victoria stood frozen, her eyes wide with shock. She whipped her head around to stare at the body on the
bed.
“Impossible p>
“How could that be Mrs. Pearson?! That was supposed to be Madam’s mother p>
“Everything was going according to plan… What went wrong p>
Hearing her mention a ‘plan, I grabbed her arm, fury barely contained. “What plan p>
“Was this your plan all along? Feed her seafood knowing she was allergic? Have your men beat an old man
for saying no p>
“Do you have any idea what you’ve done? This isn’t an accident, it’s murder p>
As if suddenly awakened, Jacob rushed into the treatment room, shouting at the surrounding medical staff,
“My father, he’s still alive! I need a team in here now p>
He dropped beside his father and started compressions, yelling over his shoulder, “Are you just going to
stand there? They were dying right in front of you p>
The medical team sprang into action, powering up various instruments and beginning resuscitation efforts.

Under Jacob’s horrified, wide-eyed stare, the nurse’s voice trailed off into silence.
Watching the doctors work methodically, Jacob’s eyes reddened. Finally, unable to bear it, he slapped
himself hard across the face.
The phrases he’d used, avoid impropriety, make her wait her turn, pay first, echoed in his head. He’d let the
woman who killed his mother get seen first, while his own mother never stood a chance.
He wanted to tear his own skin off.
He had guarded so vigilantly against me, constantly afraid I would take advantage of the Pearson wealth. In
the end, he had been the one to cause his own mother’s death.
Victoria finally grasped the full picture. Though her face was a mask of terror, she cautiously sidled up to
Jacob.
“Mr. Pearson, I didn’t mean to… I didn’t know it was the Mr. and Mrs. Pearson p>
“I’m sorry… I’m truly sorry! It was the Madam… yes, it was Sophia! She deliberately misled me! She made me
think they were her parents! That’s why I did it p>
“It’s Sophia! She’s the real culprit p>
Her voice grew louder and more insistent, as if volume could make her accusations true.
I looked at her with pure contempt. “So even if they were my parents, that would’ve made it okay p>
“I told you, multiple times, she’s allergic to shellfish. You served it anyway. That’s not an accident. That’s
intent p>
“And I said they were Jacob’s parents. You didn’t want to hear it p>
Jacob slowly turned his gaze to Victoria, as if seeing the highly-educated woman he had once admired in a
completely new light.
