When I clocked out that evening and headed for the staff exit with my coworkers, Cassian’s flashiest black sedan was already sitting at the curb.
He was leaning against the door, and even from a distance, that high–tier Alpha aura of his was making every werewolf in the vicinity do a double–take.
Listening to my colleagues whisper and gush with envy. I had no choice but to drag him aside. “What are you doing here?” I hissed.
Cassian just shrugged like it was obvious. “I’m your mate. Is it a crime to pick my wife up from work p>
I stared at him, my forehead knotting up.
In all the years I’d known him, I’d never heard him use the word “wife” so casually.
What was wrong with him?
Did Samantha finally figure him out and lock him out of the apartment?
I didn’t have time to overthink his weird behavior before a coworker waved me over. I tried to brush him off. “I have to work late. I’m heading out on an emergency call with Dr. Halsey. It’s a request from another pack, so just go back to the apartment p>
Cassian wasn’t budging. He grabbed my wrist, his grip firm. “I’ll drive you p>
I felt a pang of unease.
For Xander to give the green light–and specifically request two top–tier healers- bad shape, and definitely someone high–ranking in their pack.
Just as I was about to shut him down, Xander walked up.

He gave Cassian a brief nod before looking at me. “Go ahead and ride with him, Cassian. You might actually know the patient p>
Cassian gave me a long, meaningful look. “Fine,” he said.
Since the two of them clearly had some silent agreement going on, I couldn’t really argue in front of everyone. I hopped in the car.
We sped through the city for over an hour until we pulled into a heavily fortified pack territory.
From the passenger seat, I could feel Cassian’s pheromones turning incredibly tense.
“You know the Alpha of this pack?” I asked, turning to him.
He didn’t answer. He just sat there with a grim look on his face.
I was about to open the door when he unbuckled his seatbelt and grabbed my wrist again.
I looked back and saw a flash of hesitation in his eyes.

Before he could tell me not to go, I cut him off. “Cassian you promised you wouldn’t interfere with my work. Don’t break that promise now p>
His eyes dimmed, and his grip loosened until he finally let go.
An omega led us into the packhouse, where we were met by an elderly Alpha leaning on a custom cane.
Xander stepped forward to greet him and introduced me.
That Alpha gave me a polite nod, but when he looked at Cassian, his eyes turned to ice. He didn’t even try to hide the hatred.
He wasted no time kicking us out. “Our Shadowfangs don’t welcome anyone from Ironthorn. Guards, show them out p>
Cassian didn’t flinch. He just squeezed my hand tighter. If you don’t want me here, Alpha Alvin, we’ll leave p>
I looked up at Cassian. He looked like a storm cloud was sitting on his face. It was clear he didn’t just know these people–they were blood enemies.
He probably tried to stop me earlier because he didn’t want me caught in the crossfire between two rival packs.
Xander stepped in to play peacemaker. “Cassian, cool it.
He stopped him, then walked over to Alvin and whispered something in his ear.
Alvin’s face went through a dozen different emotions in a few seconds before he forced himself to calm
down.
“The healers can go up,” Alvin barked, “but he stays downstairs p>
I stood there, looking between the three of them.
Cassian definitely knew who the patient was before we even got here, but he didn’t say a word.
And Xander clearly knew about the bad blood, too, but brought Cassian anyway.
I was the only one being kept in the dark.
“Be careful up there,” Cassian muttered. “I’ll wait for you down here p>
I nodded and followed Xander and Dr. Halsey upstairs.
The second–floor hallway was intense. There was a servant every three steps and a guard every five. The whole place was under heavy surveillance.
The further we walked, the more suffocating it felt.
This didn’t feel like a home; it felt like a prison.
Thinking about Cassian’s warning, I started to get nervous.
I tugged on Xander’s sleeve. “Xander, why so many cameras p>
He stopped and lowered his voice. “Just focus on the patient. Don’t ask questions.
