Her usual coffee came from cheap assembly lines–low–grade stuff that was undrinkable without a mountain of sugar and cream. She hadn’t developed the palate to distinguish high–end origins.
The older woman was clearly flaunting the gap in their status, using a simple cup of coffee to remind her of the miles between their bloodlines.

Alaina stirred her coffee lazily with a silver spoon. “Samantha, for my own grandson, I am willing to give you a hand. But my position is sensitive. Samantha looked down, her hands clenching under the table.

After a long silence, she put on a fake, selfless act. “Ma’am, I have to think of Cassian’s reputation. I’m willing to suffer any humiliation for him. I just worry about the boy. If he stays with me without a recognized. status, the purebloods will call him a fatherless bastard when he grows up p>

She kept calling the boy her grandson and knew they were in trouble, so why wouldn’t she just put the deed in her name? Why the charade of a lease?
