Third Person’s POV
The morning after the gala, Trista went straight to Xander’s office.
“Alpha Xander, Alistair is doing better, but fixing a shattered mental link is going to take a massive amount of time p>
Trista looked worried. “He’s been skipping his sessions, and it’s a bad move. He’s hurting his own recovery p>
Xander set his files down. “You’re his healer, so feel free to reach out. But if he won’t play ball, we have to respect that. He’s the Shadowfang Alpha–nobody can force the guy to do anything p>
After she left the office, Trista couldn’t shake the pit in her stomach.
During her last visit to Shadowfang, she had been 100% sure Alistair was hiding a serious injury.
She remembered when she was at her lowest–how Alistair had leaned on the Simmons just to make sure her severance went through smoothly.
Now that he was in trouble, she couldn’t just sit back and watch.
After work, Trista drove out to the Shadowfangs alone.
Since she didn’t have an appointment, she parked at the gates, trying to come up with a halfway decent excuse to get inside.
Just then, a beat–up pickup truck–the kind used by scrap metal haulers–pulled up slowly.
Two middle–aged guys hopped out and walked straight toward her car.
Trista checked the time. It wasn’t even 7:00 PM yet. Since she saw trucks like this in her neighborhood all the time, she didn’t think much of it at first.
The men stopped by her window and pointed toward the Shadowfang packhouse. “You the owner of this place? ”
Trista rolled her window down just an inch, eyeing them with a cold, clinical look.
Remembering Alistair’s recent “radio silence,” her guard went up instantly.
I’m just pulled over to make a call. The signal is dead out here p>
The two men traded a look but didn’t say a word. Their eyes drifted past her, coldly scanning her backseat.
“Are you looking for the owner for something?” Trista pressed.
The men froze for a split second before lunging back into their truck. The engine roared, and they pulled a hard U–turn, peeling away from the gate.
Alarm bells went off in Trista’s head. She jumped out of her car and flagged down the Shadowfang

If they were just local scrappers, they would’ve asked if she had anything to sell–they wouldn’t be testing to see if she owned the estate, and they definitely wouldn’t have bolted the second she asked a question.
The guards opened the gate, and Trista drove through.
As Trista followed the beta into the living room, the silence hit her like a wall.
There were no patrols; she didn’t even see any omegas working. The entire mansion felt like a dead zone. It sent a chill down her spine.
She headed up to the second–floor study.
Alistair was in his wheelchair, wearing a dark, low–cut robe. He looked ghostly pale, his fingers idly flicking his obsidian prayer beads. When he saw her, the air in the room turned heavy.
Trista bit the bullet. “Alpha Alistair, I was just driving by after work and thought I’d check in p>
Alistair maneuvered his wheelchair toward her.
The drive from the healing center to his place was at least an hour–in the complete opposite direction. He watched her, clearly not buying the lie for a second.
Seeing he wasn’t going to make it easy, Trista knelt beside him and tucked the thin blanket over his legs. “Look, since I’m already here, just let me see how you’re doing,” she said, her voice softening.
Alistair looked at her sideways, finally showing a rare crack in his armor. “You’ve got a hell of a lot of heart,
kid
“I try Trista started checking his vitals, watching his face closely.
She knew he was hurt even if he wouldn’t admit it, and from what she could tell, the recovery was at least moving in the right direction.
The second she finished, Alistair told Abbott to show her out.
Trista lingered, lowering her voice. “Alpha Alistair, I think I was followed when I pulled up p>
She gave him every detail about the suspicious guys in the truck.
Alistair’s expression sharpened instantly. He signaled Abbott to check the security feeds.
When Abbott left. Trista added. ‘I don’t know if they have partners. If I leave now and they follow me home, my families are in danger.
She didn’t know what kind of mess was going on at Shadowfang, but she knew Alistair was in deep
Those men had seen her face and her plates. She had to be smart.
Abbott came back a minute later and whispered in Alistair’s car.
Alistair looked up at Trista. “You’re staying here tonight. Take the room next to mine p>

Trista was a light sleeper; the second she heard an odd sound, she was wide awake.
Remembering Alistair’s warning, she didn’t even turn on her phone for light. She slipped out of her room and into the pitch–black hallway, moving like a ghost.
