Undoubtedly, Dominic would help the little girl. Even so, one thought lingered. Even if they met one last time, the girl would never come back.
Dominic let out a soft breath and lit another cigarette. The ember flared, then dimmed, flickering in the darkened room.
The next morning, Dominic’s alarm pulled him from sleep. He rubbed his eyes, shook off the drowsiness, and got dressed.
He went first to Charlotte’s room. She lay in bed, looking small and miserable.
“Mister, I can’t take my clothes off, and I can’t sleep. But I’ve been very good. I didn’t make any noise or fuss, ” she said pitifully.
Dominic smiled and gave her a thumbs–up. “You’re awesome, Charlotte. You’re doing great today. Keep it up p>

Lilith jolted awake instantly.
Dominic found it amusing. As always, she feared her teacher more than anything else.
He walked her to school.
He did not drive. Luxe Residence sat less than a mile from Blossom Elementary, an easy ten–minute walk.
After dropping her off, he planned to deal with Charlotte’s situation.
His phone rang.
“Dominic, where are you?” Autumn asked.
Her voice sounded normal today, without its usual playful lilt.
“ I just dropped my kid off at school. I’m heading back now,” he replied.
“Wait for me at the community entrance. ” She hung up immediately.
Dominic recalled that they had agreed to handle some work matters today. After a moment’s thought, he waited at the entrance to Luxe Residence.
Before long, a bright red Ferrari screeched to a stop in front of him.
The window slid down. Autumn, wearing mirrored sunglasses, tilted her head toward the passenger seat. “Get in ”
Dominic opened the door and climbed in.
