Now it was I who came up short. I had nothing to bring to prove the purity of my intentions.
And so I held myself back. When I could return her mother to her care, perhaps I would dare ask for more.
I said my farewells, and then rejoined my warriors as our convoy rolled out of the village and in the direction of the Rogue encampment and fortress where Avery’s mother was last held.
Our best hope of success lay in stealth, speed, and strength. Most of my warriors had two of the three.

More than that, I felt personally invested in this mission. Avery’s mother was important to her, and therefore to me. I couldn’t ask another warrior to take more risk than I was willing to take.
So they provided my surveillance cover and backup as I crept past the Rogue King’s posted guards and into the hallways of the holding cells where Avery’s mother was last seen alive.
Avery’s POV
The knock on my door came in the early hours of the morning. It took me mere moments to cross my room and fling open the door.
Gideon stood before me, dressed head to toe in black combat wear. His hands were covered in blood, and he looked tired, but thankfully unharmed.
Questions welled up in my throat, and I found I was too terrified to voice any of them out loud. What if he didn’t have good news for me? What if he hadn’t found my mother, or worse, he had but she hadn’t made it? What if all the warriors had died?
I couldn’t say any of it. I just stared up at him, hands trembling in the sleeves of
my
bathrobe.
“We did it.” He blurted out, sweeping forward to embrace me tightly. 1
Relief flooded through me along with surprise at his arms sliding around me. The combination of both resulted in me melting into his arms with a soft cry.
“My mother?” I gasped, clinging onto his broad shoulders to anchor myself lest I be swept away in my flood of emotions.
“She is with the healers. She’s in bad shape, but they think she will recover with rest and good food p>
Gideon drew back though his hands continued to rest on my waist as he looked down at me with a serious expression. I sensed there was more.
“What is it?” I asked, panic rising again.
“I need to say this, Avery, please just listen p>
Concern flooded through me, and it was all I could do to nod consent.

Gideon’s fingers clenched in the waistband of my bathrobe as he searched for the words he was trying
to say.
“I have learned from my mistakes,” his handsome face bore an anguished expression as he confessed, I will find a way to make them up to you. I want to atone for the hurts I have caused-to you and your mother both.” 1
I stared up at him mutely, what was he saying? Was this an apology for not believing me? For the treatment I had received at the hands of Dierdra over the last few painful months?

“I make you this vow,” Gideon’s dark gaze was serious, his grip on me firm as he held me at arms length and earnestly promised, “I will earn your affection. I will be the husband you deserve from this point forward.” (1
I couldn’t believe what he was saying. His words fell like a gentle rain onto the parched desert of my heart.
