I stood there for a second, staring at the closed elevator doors. Then I looked down at the envelope in my hand. It had Evergreen Pack’s emblem embossed on the front.
Back in the day, an invitation like this would have made my day. Someone like me, an ex-wolfless, getting invited to a handsome Alpha’s banquet? It would have sounded like a dream come true, a chance to move up in society and dress up in the way that only werewolf women really knew how to do.
But now it just felt like a trap.
Finally, I decided to find Bjorn. Just as I expected, he was standing right by the corner, and popped out when I approached.
“Are you gonna go?” he asked.
I sighed. “No, Bjorn p>
“Was that my dad p>
My chest squeezed painfully. “No,” I said. “He wasn’t p>

He nodded slowly and looked down at the floor. “Oh p>
That one small word did more damage than anything he had said to me yesterday. Sometimes, it was easy to forget that he was only ten, and when he did that, it was a bitter reminder of how little he truly was. I looked away and decided not to berate him about the copier.
“Come on,” I said, heading back toward my office. “We’ve still got work to do p>
He followed, and for a minute, I thought he would drop the subject. But as soon as we were alone in my office, Bjorn turned to me.
“If he’s an Alpha, then there are gonna be other wolves at that party,” he said. “My dad could be there, or someone who knows lim. If I could just p>
“Your father is not in Evergreen Pack,” I said curtly, “And we’re not going p>
“Why can’t we p>
“Because I don’t want to,” I said.

Bjorn’s hands curled into fists. He opened his mouth like he wanted to say something else, but seemed to give up and simply flopped into the chair in the corner with a hot huff.
This time, I didn’t bother to try to put him to work. I was too tired at this point to deal with any of it.
The rest of the day was quiet. Bjorn kept to himself, drawing in the notebook I gave him with sharp, angry strokes. When I glanced over, I saw that he was really just scribbling, pressing the pen down so hard it was wearing holes into the paper. I decided to just leave him to it and let him work this out in his own way.
Because he would. He always did. This was just a phase, just like everything else, and one day he would look back and understand why I had to put my foot down.
At least, I hoped he would.
Finally, we returned home. Bjorn was quiet during dinner, even though my mother had made his favorite: mac and cheese with a sloppy joe on the side. He barely ate it, and when I finally excused him from the table, he got up and went to his room without another word.

I forced a smile and kissed her head as I picked up her plate. “I’m fine p>
I headed to the kitchen and put the leftovers in containers, then got to work on the dishes, digging my arms up to the elbow in the soapy water. We had a dishwasher, but doing the dishes by hand
Was strangely soothing.
I had just finished with the dishes and was drying off my hands when I heard a knock at the door,
I frowned, checking the time. It was almost mine. My mother was already upstairs for the night, and I could hear Bjorn’s TV playing his video game sounds, but I knew he wouldn’t come
at any point now, I set the towel down and went to the front door, and when I opened it, Claire was standing on my porch in her coat and scarf, holding a bottle of red wine.
