Sebastian glanced at me briefly, just for a second, and then looked back at Bjorn.
“Tell you what,” he said, “tomorrow morning, I’ll take you out to the training grounds. Some of the younger wolves run drills in the morning, and you can meet everyone then. We might even see if your wolf wants to stretch his legs p>
Bjorn’s face lit up. “Seriously p>
“Seriously. If your mom says it’s okay, that is p>
They both looked at me. I hesitated, uncertain. I wasn’t so sure about shifting for Bjorn; his pup was still unruly, and he’d only just gotten over his fever.
Finally, I said, “Maybe no shifting just yet. But it would be nice for you to meet some kids your age p>
Bjorn seemed satisfied by that and went back to his meal.
Just then, the doorbell went off, making me jump. Sebastian pushed his chair back and stood, walking out of the room. I heard the sound of voices, and a few moments later, he returned with two people in tow: an older man with silvery hair and a young girl, no older than eighteen, with long, dark hair and sharp
eyes.
“Avery,” Sebastian said, gesturing to the guests, “this is Alpha Matthew, and his daughter Fiona. Their pack is close by-they were passing through and stopped in. Matthew, this is Avery, a guest of mine p>
Alpha Matthew smiled and extended his hand. I stood and took it. It was firm, but his hand was warm and friendly. “Lovely to meet you,” he said.
“Likewise p>
Sebastian gestured to the table. “Please take a seat. We were just about to have dessert p>
Bjorn perked up at the mention of dessert.
Fiona smiled at me and took a seat beside her father. She was pretty and elegant, with a composed manner about her that stood out starkly against her obviously young age. She was quiet as the staff brought out small plates of cake and coffee for the adults, but I spotted her glancing at me a few times.
Dessert was uneventful. Matthew and Sebastian mostly talked about pack matters. Fiona was quiet, demurely picking at her cake, Bjorn scarfed his down quickly and asked for another helping. Normally, I wouldn’t let him eat so many sweets at once, but since he was getting his strength up, I let him have the rest of mine while I sipped my coffee.
Eventually, Bjorn got tired and started yawning. I quietly excused us and took him upstairs, where I helped him get ready for bed and tucked him in.
“Mom?” he asked as I headed over to his door.

He yawned. “I like it here p>
I hesitated with my hand on the doorknob. Truthfully, so far, I liked it here, too. Sebastian was a good host and I liked his principles. I just wished I could feel that way about the rest of the packs.
“Oh,” Bjorn said, “can you please get me some water p>
I nodded and opened the door. “Sure, kiddo p>
I left and headed downstairs. I could still hear Sebastian and Matthew talking in what sounded like the sitting room now, but I made my way to the kitchen instead. It was quiet and dimly lit. An old woman, presumably one of the staff, was sitting in a rocking chair by the hearth and knitting. She didn’t look up as I walked by and went to the sink to fill a glass.
With the water in hand, I turned, making my way back to the stairs. I’d made it to the bottom of the stairs when a presence caught my attention. Looking over, I spotted Fiona standing nearby. Her eyes shone strangely in the darkness.
“You’re Avery, right?” she asked, stepping into the light. “Alpha Gideon’s missing mate p>
