The words rang again and again in my head as I sat in the waiting hall, my heart sinking lower and lower until it reached the darkest depth inside me.
It stung.
No, it hurt.

tears.
I have experienced heartbreak before, too many times. The first was learning I did not carry Frost blood.
The second, realizing my true blood family did not want me, and never would. The third was losing my virginity in a dark alley, forcibly.
More pain followed. Layers of trauma, including the moment I discovered the man I married had cheated and lied.
But none of those pain hollowed me out the way this did.
This one came sudden, heavy, suffocating, and tried to breathe, but I couldn’t.
He had disconnected the call so swiftly, and then my phone rang again. I believed it was him.
I hurried to answer only for a woman’s voice to speak.
It couldn’t be.
I blinked frantically, reaching to call him again, but something in my mind blanked.
I froze for a heart–stopping second, eyes fixed of nothing as background noise faded.
Chatter, laughter, every sound distorted.
I tried to grasp reality but the phone slipped from my fingers and I blinked, trying to help myself but nothing worked.

A frown creased my face, confused why she was standing at an angle, until the floor slammed into the back of my head and I realized I was the one who had fallen.
I tried to breathe but only gasped, gagged.

I tried to stay awake, not to surrender to the numbness but I couldn’t fight long.
My eyelids grew heavy. The ache in my heart unbearable.
I fluttered my eyes and the last sight a doctor kneeling beside me.
My eyelids fell, and before unconsciousness claimed me, I whispered a prayer.
Not just a prayer, a plea, and I begged the Moon Goddess to grant it.
I have never wanted too much, neither from human region nor werewolf territory.
But now, I want something. A life.
I don’t want to die.
I want to live so I can fight for who I love, for who I want.
