“How am I going to plead with her?” I muttered to myself. But before I could think of an answer, a knock hit my window, yanking me back.
I turned slowly to see Desmond waiting. I lowered the glass and he bent slightly.

I stepped out and paused a moment, forcing myself to gather everything inside me before heading in. The door was opened by the butler, Ramin, elderly, hair silvered, but sharp as a blade. I handpicked him for that very reason. He is wit.
“You’re here, Boss,” he bowed, but I didn’t respond. I bypassed him and entered the large, spacious living room.
The housekeeper, Karmen, was descending the stairs. The moment she saw me, she froze and bowed.

“Cupid!” my name rang out from the balcony above, and I lifted my gaze. Varian. A friend, one of the most skilled doctors I know.
We schooled together, and I still remember how his sister was head–over–heels in whatever for me. I had to keep my distance so she wouldnt get drunk on illusions and sink into my

I climbed the stairs toward him, and he looked me over before grinning. He closed the distance and hugged me tight.
“Moon goddess, you look good,” he said, pulling back to punch my arm. I sighed softly, brushing past him to open the first bedroom door.
I froze in the doorway.
My mother lay sleeping on the bed, tucked under the coverlet, a drip running into her vein.
Quietly, I closed the door and turned. Varian’s nod met me, the smile fading from his face.
“Let’s talk,” he said as he headed downstairs. I followed. He settled on the couch; I did the same, waiting.
“She’s fine,” he said.
I paused, staring at him, waiting for the but. Instead, he smiled gently.
“Just stressed. High blood pressure. Other than that, she’s fine p>
I lowered my gaze, swallowing hard. Then I looked at him again, wanting to ask what I couldn’t voice. Varian held my stare, sighed, and nodded.
“She’s in menopause. The rape… uhm… they didn’t do too much physical damage. I’ve prescribed her medication.” He handed me the paper. “Balanced diet, complete rest. She’ll regain her strength and her health p>
I stared at the prescription sheet, nodded.
“Thank you p>
He smiled and patted my back.
“She’s a rogue which makes it clear she’s the woman you’ve been searching for your whole life. Your rogue mother p>
I looked away, nodding.
“I found her p>
“Good for you. Call me if you need anything else. I’ve got to run.” He got up but paused at the doorway. “My sister sends her regards,” he added with a wink.
I didn’t respond. I just looked away. Moments later the door opened and shut, leaving silence behind. Heavy, echoing silence.

I looked ahead to see Karmen and I beckoned at her with my head. Ste rushed forwards, bowing. I handed him the sheet of prescription.
“Give Laroux to oversee my mother’s health p>
“Yes, Boss. ”
She hurried off to relay the message to Laroux, the maid and I sat there, staring at nothing, until I heard Desmond’s steps. He handed me a tablet, and I lifted my gaze to him.
“Look. There are three Yasmins in Feroz’s world. You’ll recognize your sister, right p>
Slowly, I looked down. The first face stared back I swiped. Another. I paused at the second. Swiped again. Then swiped back.
Those eyes. That smile.
Yasmin.
“If it’s this one, Boss… it’ll be hard to get her out, Desmond said, taking a seat beside me.
“On what ground?” I asked quietly, still staring into space.
“She’s Hal’s girl. And Hal is Feroz’s younger brother p>
Silence slammed into me. Calculating her age now, Yasmin wouldn’t be more than twenty- two. Four years old when I left Downside. Eighteen years later, and she is a whore to the younger brother of the man who sentenced her own brother to prison.
“Tonight, Boss,” Desmond continued. “There’s an auction at the underground of Feroz’s world. Girls and virgins will be sold. Yasmin will be there but she only attends with Hal p>
I went mute again, calculating everything, then modded.
“How about Marlik? ”
“I found the prison he’s in. Three hours from here. He’s held in solitary, the worst kind. Here’s his record. They say he’s been high and high. I think he gets supplied drugs daily. Probably to dull his senses p>
I took the file showing Marlik’s record and his picture. The sight of him made my reason numb.
“Fix a visit,” I ordered.

And with that, I stood and headed back to my car, ready to go to the prison to meet Marlik.
