Calliope had no idea who was behind it all, but she knew the Jewell family’s connections pretty well. And honestly, it just didn’t make sense-she couldn’t imagine anyone with enough pull who’d actually want to help them out of this
mess.
Yet, someone had clearly stepped in. The Jewell family had gone through the wringer, and somehow, they came out the other side without a scratch.
This wasn’t the sort of thing that just happened. No ordinary person or group could pull that off for them.
Why were they still standing?
Calliope didn’t really get it. But unlike Portia, she wasn’t furious; her reaction was a bit more level-headed. She wasn’t angry, but a little warning bell went off in her mind.
Given the Jewell family’s reputation, if they’d gotten away with this, what was to stop them from coming after her again? If someone strong enough to save the Jewell family had shown up, this wasn’t just some random act. Whoever it was- they had to know exactly what sort of people the Jewells were. And yet, they helped them anyway. Which meant there had to be a reason.
But what reason? What was their angle? Was it about the Jewells, or was it about her?

Portia wasn’t stupid. After fuming for a minute, she seemed to catch on. She looked up at Calliope, her brow furrowed. “Are they coming after you p>
“The Jewells have a grudge against you, right? They go down because of you, and then-bam!—someone swoops in to help them. The Jewells don’t have much left, so whoever’s helping them probably doesn’t want anything from them. Which means maybe it’s you they’re after p>
“Callie, you think so, too p>
Calliope nodded. “That’s what I’m guessing p>
“Damn it, but who the hell is it?” Portia muttered through gritted teeth. “Should I
just march over to the Jewells and ask them myself p>
Her face was thunderous; she was seriously mad.
“What the heck is going on p>
“Callie, you haven’t pissed anyone off lately, have you p>
Portia shook her head as if trying to make sense of it. “You’re such a good person; you almost never get into fights with anyone. You’ve got tons of friends, you’re married to Silas Who want to target you, of all people p>
Calliope couldn’t come up with any likely suspects; she just shook her Portia a reassuring
head and gave about it f
smile “Don’t worry
trouble comes, I’ll deal with it. The
Jewells couldn’t take me down, and
neither can whoever’s backing
them p>
She picked up her phone and fired off a couple of texts, asking her contacts to dig
up who was pulling strings for the Jewell family.
“Yeah, you’re a badass. Who’d dare mess with you?” Portia said, scooping up a big forkful of chocolate cake and shoving it into her mouth, still fuming.
“I’ll let my dad and my brothers know not to do business with the Jewells, and to warn their friends too. They need to stay clear of that family p>
Calliope nodded and smiled. She wasn’t too worried-if they made a move on her, she could handle it. She wasn’t afraid of a fight.
“Alright, let’s drop it,” Calliope said, turning to Portia. “You mentioned Mavis told Uriah this was her last job? She’s finally hanging up her boots for good p>
“Yeah.” Portia nodded. “It’s about time, too. That line of work is way too dangerous p>
“She said this last job’s supposed to be tricky, but I don’t know the details p>
“But at least Uriah’s with her,” Portia continued. “He might be a pain, but he’s good at what he does.
Otherwise, Mavis wouldnt have
made so much money doing this crazy stuff p>
“Sounds like Mavis is really done with Uriah this time,” Calliope said.
“She’s not the type to drag things out forever,” Portia agreed. “She’s already done more than enough for him p>
