Back when they were in Nareigh, Jonathan used to drive over to Rosary Estates to see her all the time. But now, she had already left Nareigh and just wanted to live on her own. Still, his Maybach was there.
After Teresa changed her clothes, she headed downstairs. Jonathan was still asleep in the car, eyes closed. It wasn’t until she knocked on the window that he finally woke up.
He hadn’t slept this well in ages. Curled up in the car, he had actually managed to get a full night’s sleep. He rolled down the window.
Teresa asked, “Why are you here so early? Is there something else you need p>
Your shirt,” Jonathan said, handing her the bag.
Teresa took the bag with the shirt inside. “You can go now. Don’t block the road here p>
Jonathan frowned. Her impatience made him fully wake up. “There’s one more thing I forgot to say yesterday p>
“What is it?” Teresa’s heart clenched a little.
“Cheryl told me about selling your place,” Jonathan said.
“The person who bought your house is Cheryl’s classmate. The buyer gave Cheryl the final payment and Cheryl wants to give you the money. But she hasn’t been able to reach you p>
Teresa let out a sigh of relief. She had been worried he would find out about the baby, and it really scared her. “Just let Cheryl keep it p>
She figured Cheryl’s baby bump must be pretty obvious by now and Cheryl shouldn’t be short on cash. Teresa always saw Cheryl as a little sister.
Jonathan was insistent. “That money belongs to you. Let me add you as a friend so I can transfer the money to you p>
Teresa had a new account, registered with her Everport number, and she barely used her old account anymore. But there was no way she was adding Jonathan as a friend. “I’ll send you my payment code p>
Since they weren’t contacts, Jonathan couldn’t send that much money. He said, “You can just add me, get the money, then delete me if you want p>
“Let’s do that,” Teresa said, not wanting to drag this out. She accepted his friend request.
She never thought the first person she’d add on her new account would be her ex–husband. She couldn’t help but glance at him again as he started the transfer.
Jonathan sent the money, and Teresa accepted it. She said, “Alright, you can go now p>
“Let me treat you to a meal,” Jonathan changed the subject, his tone gentle.
Teresa shook her head firmly. She didn’t want to repeat the same mistakes. “No need. If you have anything else to say, just say it now p>
She added, “If there’s anything left between us, let’s settle it all at once. If not, then that’s it. I really enjoy living on my own these days, and I don’t want anyone interfering.
“And please, don’t tell anyone where I live. Not even my family. I’d really appreciate it p>
When she finished, Jonathan’s face turned cold. “So in your eyes, I’m just someone who can’t keep his mouth shut p>

She had picked a city he never thought she’d choose. Everport wasn’t as developed as Nareigh, but Jonathan could understand why she came here.

It was close to Narcigh and Lonisburg and near her grandparents‘ house. Even though Everport wasn’t the capital, it was still a good place to settle down.
He had looked at maps with Benny before and told Benny Teresa would pick a city near Nareigh. He had been right–she was always attached to home.
“Anything else?” Teresa asked, her tone cold.
Jonathan just looked at her for a long moment. In the end, he didn’t say another word. He got in his car and drove away. Teresa only let out a breath when she saw his car disappear.
When Teresa got home, she took the shirt out of the bag, only to realize there were actually two shirts inside.
One was the white shirt she had worn yesterday, the one that got stained with wine. It had been washed and dried, though if she looked closely, she could still see some faint traces of the wine.
The other was a brand–new white shirt, her size, with the tag still on.
Suddenly, Teresa remembered seeing him asleep in his car when she went downstairs. She wondered, ‘Did he go wash my shirt, buy me a new one, and then spend the night in his car p>
That didn’t even matter. He was already gone. On the table, the roses were still in full bloom, their smell filling the room.
She pulled out her phone and wanted to send him a quick thank you for the new shirt. But the message wouldn’t go through.
She had deleted him many times before, but this time, he was the one who deleted her. Teresa thought, ‘Maybe that’s for the best p>
Teresa didn’t take Michael to kindergarten that day. She was worried Jonathan might see him, even if the chances were small. To be safe, she decided to wait a couple of days. Since she had classes, she headed straight to school.
“Hey Teresa, are you doing okay after yesterday?” It was Ivy, the teacher who lent her a jacket.
Teresa returned the jacket and gave Ivy a few boxes of hydrating face masks as a thank you for yesterday.
Teresa said, “No worries. Just be careful around Lysander p>
Ivy took the masks and leaned in to whisper, “We were all talking yesterday–looks like Lysander’s into you. His family is pretty powerful, so just keep your distance p>
Teresa nodded. Later that afternoon, Lysander called Teresa into his office.
Lysander looked at Teresa, smiling. “I had a little too much to drink. I wanted to say sorry, but you left after going to the
restroom p>
“I wasn’t feeling well, so I took a cab home, Teresa answered, keeping her distance.
“Not feeling well? Want me to get a doctor, Teresa?” Lysander asked.
He motioned for Teresa to come closer, but she didn’t move. She said she was feeling much better.

Lysander leaned back and lowered his voice. “You’re still on a contract here, right? It’s a shame–your pay isn’t as good as a full–time job’s. If you want to go full–time, I can make it happen p>
