Ryan’s face turned sour. He thought, ‘What was Kevin trying to say–calling me a show–off? What was I showing off about? Sure, my own abilities are just so–so, but my family background is top–notch‘
His family owned several BMW’s, a few storefronts, he was an architect with a respectable job, his parents worked for a state- owned company, and his sister was a teacher.
There weren’t many people in all of Everport who could match up to him. Kevin calling him a poser was just laughable.
Teresa had already come out of the main entrance of the bank, hopped back on her scooter, and was heading off to pick up Michael from kindergarten.
Ryan pulled his car right up in front of her, making sure everyone could see he was driving a BMW. “Ms. Johnston, want to grab a bite together? Last time you said you were going to the restroom, but then you just disappeared p>
Teresa fell silent. So far, the only person she’d ever seen waiting for her all night was Teresa–no one else.
She didn’t buy for a second that the man in front of her would wait all night. “Mr. Thompson, I already told your sister. I’ve been divorced. You really don’t mind p>
Ryan’s expression changed. “My sister never told me you were divorced. She just said you were my age and single p>
“Well, now you know. Is it a problem that I’m divorced?” Teresa had already walked away, and Ryan didn’t go after her.
The next day, Teresa showed up to class in a pale green long dress. The weather was warming up, and lately, a lot of teachers at school started wearing dresses too.
Teresa knew all about the dress code for teachers. The long dress she picked was very modest, with the hem falling to her calves and everything covered up tight.
She figured she might as well wear her favorite clothes while she still could, before her bump started to show.
In the office, only Ivy complimented Teresa, saying she looked beautiful. Everyone else just gave her weird looks.
Especially Tina, who kept clicking her tongue and making a fuss about why Teresa was wearing a dress. There was a hint of disdain in her eyes. Teresa knew Tina was holding a grudge because she’d turned down her brother.
When Teresa walked into the classroom, the kids all gasped in awe, their eyes lighting up.
The warmth in her heart was real. She taught the lower grades, and her students were always sweet to her. She did her best to be good to them too.
With exams just around the corner, Teresa encouraged the kids to do their best. One little girl, who’d been out sick for several days, came to school today–still hooked up to an IV, doing homework and reading at her desk.
Teresa’s heart ached for her. The poor child kept coughing, her face pale as a sheet. As a mom herself, Teresa couldn’t help but wonder, ‘How could any mother not feel for her own kid? Is getting good grades really worth all this p>
She just couldn’t watch anymore. Teresa walked over and gently told the girl to go rest in the nurse’s office, that she didn’t

She noticed the heavy dark circles under the girl’s eyes. Teresa thought, ‘Is she really still studying at home while getting injections? It was honestly heartbreaking.
Teresa’s warm hand seemed to give the girl a bit of comfort. The girl nodded, and with a classmate by her side, headed off to the nurse’s office.
