His long legs carried him swiftly out of the room.
The door clicked shut, and I sat back down at the table, my fork absently prodding the fried egg on my plate. Did he really dislike me that much?
Alexander’s appetite had always been modest, and mine was even smaller.
Of the twenty or so breakfast items laid out, we’d barely touched two or three dishes.
Everything else remained untouched, a wasteful display of abundance.
Damn capitalist extravagance!
I silently scolded him for his lifelong habit of luxury that clearly hadn’t changed one bit.
The chair across from me sat empty. Without Alexander, how boring everything felt.
After just a few minutes, the door opened again.
“Alexander!!” I looked up excitedly, his name escaping my lips before I could stop myself. When I realized who had actually entered, my smile instantly transformed into an awkward
grimace.
“Miss Winters, Alpha Blackwood has gone to the conference room,” the butler informed me
as he led several staff members in to clear the table.
“When will he return?” I asked.
“I wouldn’t know. Alpha Blackwood’s affairs are not for someone like me to question. I simply perform my duties as required p>

Soon after, several maids entered the room. One carried a makeup case, another brought a
new phone, everything I might need.
Another wheeled in a multi–functional clothing rack loaded with designer dresses in styles and colors perfect for a seaside setting. Beside the clothes were various elegant accessories. The display was so dazzling it almost hurt my eyes.
This treatment seemed excessive, but then I remembered–Alexander had spent a hundred
million on me.
No, scratch that–what Alexander spent would ultimately become my debt anyway.
Paying to buy myself. There couldn’t be a worse deal in the world.
“Miss Winters, everything is ready for you. Please help yourself p>

After the butler and staff left, I selected a dress, changed, and applied suitable makeup. My first priority was to call Elena. After assuring her I was safe, I asked about Aria.
When I heard my daughter’s voice on the phone, my heart melted instantly.
“Mommy? Where are you? Are you okay?” Her little voice trembled with worry that no four-
year–old should have to feel.
“I’m fine, sweetheart,” I reassured her, struggling to keep my voice steady. “Mommy had to help a friend who was in trouble. It was very sudden, and I couldn’t tell you before I left p>
“But you didn’t come home last night.” Her voice was small, vulnerable. “Aunt Elena said

Then we talked a little longer–about her drawings, her favorite cartoon, how she’d helped
Elena water the plants. Every

When it was time to say goodbye, I had to force myself to end the call before I broke down
completely.
After the call ended, I sat there for a long moment, staring at the blank screen in my hand.
Should I tell her?
She had the right to know. Even if Alexander no longer remembered who he was to me, did that mean Aria should be kept in the dark forever?
She deserved better than that.
