“I’m okay.” She flexed her legs wider, rolled her hips. Declan slipped deeper inside her, just an inch, but it felt like a yard. They both groaned, bodies trembling.
“You alright?” Declan asked raggedly.

first of all, he couldn’t tell her if it was, and second of all, of course it

That was a conversational avenue that Tessa wasn’t even remotely ready to discuss. So she changed the topic in the easiest way possible–she turned to face Declan, wrapping her arms around his neck, and kissed him.
Several hours later, they’d missed dinner, but they’d made each other come three more times. They lay drowsily in bed together, neither one of them talking. Tessa was content with the silence. It felt good. And besides, talking meant asking–and
answering–uncomfortable questions. Like what are we doing? Where is this going? Things had changed between them. But how much they had changed, and how exactly, was a question she was too scared to ask. So instead, she lay quietly with Declan’s strong arms wrapped around her, pressed against his heavy, warm body.
“Gracie,” Declan said, late in the evening, sounding contemplative.
“Hm?” She tried not to tense. There was a big question coming, she could feel it. But she didn’t know if she was ready to answer it.

A scream shattered through the peaceful silence of the night. Declan

and Tessa sat bolt upright. He went to the window, staring down at
the street. In a flash, he was off the bed.
“What’s going on?” Tessa looked out the window. A huddled mass
lay in the middle of the street, dark and unmoving.
“I don’t know. Stay here.” He ripped the door open and vanished into the hall, slamming the door behind him.
