I arrived to the Marlik house under the afternoon sky, my breath heavy and dread coiling tight in my chest. The moment I step out, I know nothing is right.
I have come so far that I no longer fear for my own life. If Feroz had come for me, I would face him head–on gladly. But here, he has my very numbers because my beloveds live in this house.
Cautiously, alone, knowing help is coming, I step inside. The usual warm greeting from the butler is absent today, and that confirms everything.
Slowly I make my way into the living room and freeze when my eyes catch the blood on the floor. Words fail to capture the terror that grips my heart in that exact moment.
I lift my gaze and see her alone on the couch. The housekeeper. Mother is not there. Marlik is not there. My sister also, and I set my jaw against the raw dread at the housekeeper’s eyes.
Quickly I start toward her, but she shakes her head sharply, forcing me to pause.
“Stay… stay away, please, ” she says, voice trembling, making me stiffen. “Stay away or… he will kill you p>
I refuse. Stay away? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I walk cautiously toward her when the energy in the room shifts.
From behind me I feel the presence, then the unmistakable sound of a gun cocking.
“It’s you,” his voice comes, low and venomous. “You’re the one who killed my foster brother. You’re the one working in the shadows to bring me down. Right p>
Slowly I turn around and settle my gaze on him. He has recovered from yesterday, but I still wonder how he found me. I had my covered last night. How did he…
face
“Your scent gives you away,” he cuts into my thoughts, as if reading them. “That crazy smell that is akin to Marlik’s. I know you’re a rogue, and it didn’t take long for all the pieces to fall into place. You… you must be the one who took my drugs too. Where is it p>
He aims the gun at me, and I hate it, the fact that he is here in the Marlik house, which was supposed to be peaceful. And whose blood is that on the floor?
“I asked you a question. Where are my drugs?!” he bellows.
I don’t speak. He smirks. “I know you won’t speak without being forced. Good p>
Just then movement comes from the balcony. I tense when I see his men holding guns to Mother’s head.
“Let her go!” I order suddenly, shaking with fury. I take a step forward, when the gunshot rings out, deafening.
I go completely still. The shot wasn’t aimed at me, but… I slowly look up to see Mother crumpling to the floor. Blood spreads from her stomach, and my face drains to ash.
“Mother p>

“Take another step and I will blow her brains off,” Feroz threatens, aiming the gun directly at her head now. His eyes remain locked on me, unwavering. “Tell me, where are my drugs p>
My insides are in turmoil. I can barely think. Mother is dying, and I can’t find Marlik or Yasmin. I know I have to act fast.
“The underworld,” I say, stepping closer. “Located in a place you will never find unless I take you. It’s underground. A place built for many purpose p>
He is carried away now. I step even closer, quietly.
“I can take you there if you want. Just… free my family p>
The words come with a heavy punch right to his jaw. I yank the gun from his hand, shoot his men dead, away from Mother and finally descend on him.
Trapping him on the floor, I rain punch after punch after punch to his jaw, wishing I could torture him more than this. Blood spatters the floor. When I am exhausted, I reach for his gun and point it right at his forehead. I am so ready to pull the trigger when sirens wail in the distance, but the car arrives faster.
Hurried footsteps. Snow bursts into the house, breathing heavily. At once she rushes to me.
“Cupid, let him go. I beg you don’t shoot him. Don’t be a murderer. The cops are on the way p>
I hear her words. I feel her presence. But this crazy man beneath me, bleeding, broken had caused her pain. Angrily I punch him harder, knocking him out cold. Only then do I realize Mother is bleeding out.
I leave him and rush upstairs to cradle Mother in my arms.
“Mother? Mom…” I look down toward the stairs. “Snow, call the ambulance. Fast p>
I hear her rushing over. Snow kneels beside Mother, then suddenly stops cold.
“I can’t find Marlik and Yasmin,” I say, leaving Mother to Snow and rushing to open doors in panic. The rooms are empty. I turn to Snow and shake my head when she suddenly stiffens, her eyes flashing briefly.
I rush to her side. She bends her head, powers taking over.
“Water,” she murmurs, vision flashing as if in great pain. By the time she finishes, sweat beads on her forehead. “They are in the pool p>
I dash out at once, just as the front door bursts open and cops flood in. I hurry to the back pool and dive in without thinking.
Yasmin is tied, Marlik weighted with rocks to sink. Pulling out my claws, I free them. Marlik surges forward to our sister, pulling her toward the pavement.
“Yasmin?!” I call, panicked. I pump her chest, but nothing. Just then Desmond bursts out from the back door. When he sees Yasmin laid lifeless on the floor, he rushes over, pushes me aside, and begins CPR, pumping her chest, breathing into her mouth in desperate panic.
I have seen Desmond fear for my safety before, but this is different. He tries again and again, even as Marlik and I begin to lose hope until Yasmin finally coughs up water and sits up gasping.
Sighing in grave relief, I turn to Marlik, wondering how it all happened, then back to Yasmin, just as Snow comes, blood all over her
hands.
