Roc was just pulling up to Crescent pack when my car rolled in behind him. Without wasting a single second, Marlik leapt out and bolted inside, nose already tracking the sharp, frantic scent of his mate while I hurried after him.

He took the stairs two and three at a time in a desperate sprint. I couldn’t keep up.

My lungs burned as I veered toward the elevator and jabbed the button. The doors slid open; I stepped in quickly. Roc slipped inside right after me. Just as the doors began to close, Sera came rushing in, breathless, hair wild.

“I got the text,” she said, eyes flicking to Roc who had clearly texted her. He gave a tight nod.

The elevator rattled upward, groaning with every floor, until it finally jolted to a stop at Mr. Mane’s hall. I hurried down the corridor toward their condo. The door already stood wide open.

I stepped quickly inside and dread slammed into me like icy wind, freezing my face and stealing my breath.

Marlik was there, chest heaving, leaning hard against the wall as though it were the only thing keeping him upright.

A rope hung from the ceiling beam, but Dove was on the floor now, interrupted, alive. The noose had been around her neck moments ago.

My eyes traced the coarse rope slowly, horror rising in my throat. I shifted my gaze to Marlik. He had arrived just in time to save her.

Dove had been about to end her life.

My heart shuddered violently, a sick, aching wave of awe and grief crashing through me.

What was she thinking?

I crossed the room on unsteady legs and knelt beside her. Quietly, gently, I gathered her into my arms.

She broke then, sobs tearing out of her in jagged pieces. Her fingers gripped my arm so tightly her nails bit skin; her whole body shivered against mine like she might shatter.

“I couldn’t save her, Snow,” she choked out between sobs. “I couldn’t save Mom. I’m such a failure. I should have reached out for help somehow, taken her away from here. I’m such a failure. Just… let me end it. Please p>

“End it?” Marlik’s voice cracked the silence like thunder. He stared down at Dove as she pulled away from me, eyes red and swollen, meeting his. “End what? Your life, with my pup inside you p>

“Excuse me,” she snapped, voice trembling with fury and pain. “That was the product of a one–night stand. It means nothing to you. Don’t even pretend I mean a single thing to you p>

Tension crashed over the abandoned living room like a physical weight.

I watched Marlik’s face, saw the storm gathering behind his eyes. Quietly, deliberately, he walked toward her. Dove instinctively searched for an escape route, but he was already there. He reached out, caught her arm, and pulled her firmly to her feet.

With careful, trembling hands he cupped her cheek, thumb brushing away a tear. I braced myself, expecting him to kiss her, something tender to calm the chaos. Instead, his next words hit like a blade,

“If you want to die, I won’t stop you,” he said, voice low and rough. “But give me my pup first p>

“Marlik p>

“After you give birth, then do whatever you want.” He gritted the words out, jaw clenched so hard I could see the muscle jump.

Adrenaline poured off him in waves. I knew he didn’t mean it, not truly. The terror of almost losing her had ripped the filter from his mouth.

Dove’s face twisted with rage. She shoved hard against his chest, fist connecting with a dull thud.

“I know you only love that dead porn star,” she spat. “I mean nothing to you. Nothing p>

Roc let out a long, exhausted sigh at their back–and–forth before making up his mind.

“You should come with me,” he said to Dove, voice steady but kind. “Come stay with us for the time being. If you stay here alone, cut off from everyone, you’ll just keep sinking deeper into the depression p>

Dove sniffed hard, wiped her face with the back of her hand, and gave a small, shaky nod. She took one hesitant step forward but Marlik caught her wrist and pulled her gently but firmly back against his chest.

“You’re coming with me,” he said, voice quieter now, resolute. He looked straight at Roc. “Don’t worry. I’ll take care of her from now on. I’m sorry I did such a poor job before. I’ve had too much going on, too much pulling me away. But that ends now p>

Roc’s jaw tightened, eyes narrowing.

“I’m not letting her go with you. Not without proper permission. You can’t just take her p>

“I am her mate,” Marlik answered, voice low and dangerous. “That gives me every right to claim her as mine. She’s carrying my pup too. I’m taking her p>

Roc stepped forward, ready to argue, shoulders squared but Sera placed a gentle hand on his arm, stopping him.

“Marlik is right,” she said softly, almost regretfully. “Dove is his mate, and she’s carrying his pup. Under wolf law, mates belong to each other. No third party can interfere p>

Roc’s eyes had been locked on Marlik fiercely, protective. Now they shifted to Sera. I watched hurt flash across his face, raw and unguarded.

“That was why you broke our engagement, then,” he said, voice suddenly quiet, almost broken. “Because you’re mated to your crazy assistant who nearly killed my sister p>

I went completely still.

How did Roc know?

Sera took a sharp step back, eyes wide with shock. She had never wanted him to find out about her mate bond, not like this.

“You look surprised,” Roc continued, the hurt hardening into something colder. “Why? You thought I wouldn’t find out? About you and him, your little escapades p>

“I did nothing with him,” she whispered, voice trembling with disbelief. But Roc wasn’t listening anymore.

He gave Dove one last, lingering glance, full of worry and unresolved pain then turned and walked out without another word.

Sera stood frozen, heart thudding so loudly I could almost hear it, wondering desperately where he had heard the news from and what else he believed.
