The dinner turns out well. In a few minutes the kitchen began to scent deliciously, and I was still at my seat when he came to serve me, placing the glass cup of water and pouring it for me before walking over to the counter to get the cutlery.
Dinner served, I stare at it and then notice he has only one chair at the dining area. Guilt suddenly creeps in. I look up at him and begin to rise, but he holds a hand out, telling me to stay comfortable.
“I have to smoke anyway and I don’t want to make you uncomfortable with it.” he said softly, and I swallowed as I searched his eyes.
Somehow I don’t want to part with him. Not now. I nod, agreeing.

Hearing that, he stares at me again as though to confirm if truly I don’t care, and I smile, nodding. With that, he walks out. After a few seconds he returns, this time with two cigarette packets, a lighter, and a bottle of wine.
He places them on the counter and simply sits there too, staring out at the ocean for a while, before reaching for his cigarette and shaking one free. He lights it, and I watch the end glow as he takes the first drag, making me swallow at the sheer allure.

He doesn’t speak to that. He only opens his wine and drinks straight from the bottle. Silence, and almost carefree, loosened up unlike how rigid he is in the city. This place seems to put him at peace, letting him lower his guard.
“I see you are… you are adopted.” I murmur softly, trying to spark a conversation. If we’re going to put on this whatever–thing between us, we need to start knowing each other.
“When I was thirteen.” he murmurs, dropping the exhausted cigarette butt into a tray before picking up another. “I was an orphan. No parents, just roaming around the streets and stealing, when I came across Alpha Ruis p>
I search his eyes; he looks back at me. There’s no shame in the word stealing. Maybe it’s a part of him he has accepted. A sin he knows he can never wash clean. A scar that will remain till eternity. Just like my own past that I can’t undo.
“I hail from the rogue town. You know it? Downside Rogue Town p>
I flinch gently at hearing Downside Rogue Town. It’s the most notorious, dirtiest, poorest place anyone can ever hail from. They’re regarded even lower than the omegas. Practically a ghetto.

“My biological parents were from there. My dad was a gambler, a drunk, a debtor. Mom was a nanny. She took care of other people’s children for money while I stayed with the neighbor, Mother too. That’s what I called her since she also brought me up. Dad never loved Mom. I know that much because all I saw growing up was him beating her, especially whenever he came home drunk p>
He shrugs as I listen quietly, watching him speak.
“My mother died when I was ten.” he murmurs softly, and I go still, my throat tightening as he lifts his gaze to me. “She died from excess bleeding. She was gang–raped too p>
Cold chills run down my spine. I pause, the cutlery suddenly cold in my grip as I stare at him.

“The men my dad owed came looking for him to collect their money. Their leader saw Mom, said her body was alluring. They took her. It was chaos, I was told, and before I returned home she only held on long enough to give her last words. ‘Live.‘ That’s all she said, and then she died p>
“People thought my father would repent, but he didn’t, and I wasn’t hoping for that. A month later he was found drowned in the town lake, and I didn’t even bother to check on his rotting corpse. My neighbor Mother took me in. I made a friend with her son, Marlik p>
Cupid nods, a small sad smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
“Marlik is my best friend. My brother. He’s older by five years. He had a little sister then, and we grew up together under Mother’s care. Mother was a dry cleaner. Washes other peoples clothes. Marlik taught me a lot. Like smoking, drinking, clubs, getting wasted, wild, and wayward. He taught me how to make ends meet. We stole. It was the easiest, and fun. Pickpocketing. “Years passed, and when I turned thirteen, we went out on an operation. We heard the Alpha of the powerful pack had come down to Downside Rogue Town. We believed there’d be valuables to steal. Marlik went alone. He couldn’t wait for a proper plan. He didn’t wait for me, and he brought home some jewels, but they were tracked. When the Godlike guards kicked down our wooden door, I took the fall for Marlik and was taken before the Alpha of Godlike p>
“Father saw me once and took me away from the town. Everybody probably thought I would be executed, I believed that too, until the Alpha said he’d adopt me instead. He gave me a last name. One of the most priceless things you can give an orphan whose father’s name was dirt. He gave me a family and a purpose p>
By the time Cupid finishes speaking, he has exhausted the first cigarette pack and is reaching for the second when I ask, my heart heavy,

He looks at me and lowers his gaze quietly.
“ By the time I returned, about three years after I was adopted, Downside Rogue Town didn’t exist anymore. They had evacuated everyone and restored the place as a road. I couldn’t find Marlik or Mother or my sister. Tracking them is hard since they’re rogues. No scent. Nothing. It’s been almost seventeen years of searching but I still can’t find them. It’s… tiring p>

He sighs, reaches for his bottle of wine, takes a gulp, and gets down from the counter.
“I’ll be in my study.” he says, walking out and leaving me in awe of his story.
