Standing behind me was the Rosemary Carter-Aaron Sinclair’s birth mother.
“You didn’t tell me you were back. We spoke just yesterday,” he said, rising to his feet.
Her smile was soft, voice softer. “I thought I’d surprise you p>
I stood too, instinctively taking my place beside Aaron.
“Mom,” he said, one arm gently guiding me closer, “this is Venus. My wife p>
He turned to me. “Venus, my mom-Rosemary Carter p>
I’d expected… more. She was elegant, yes-but not the intimidating kind. Her posture was easy, her aura warm. Stunning without trying, and not at all the fragile woman people had whispered about.
Why the hell were they calling her sick?
“Good evening, ma’am,” I said, offering my hand. Sue me-I panicked.
She ignored it and pulled me into a hug. “Ma’am? Do I look that old p>
I blinked, startled-then laughed, a little breathless. “Sorry. Habit p>
“You’re beautiful,” she said warmly.
“Thank you,” I murmured, cheeks heating.
“Call me Rose. Makes me feel young again p>
“You’re not even that old,” Aaron said, and something in his voice… softened.
He looked at her like she hung the moon. Love. Plain and powerful.
“You didn’t even invite me to the wedding,” she teased, throwing him a playful glare. “I told you it was too big a lie to stay a lie, Silas p>
That name-Silas-clicked just as the man appeared beside her. Tall, good-looking, late forties maybe. He looked at her like she was his whole world.
Silas. The boyfriend. From our first date-I remembered. He had a daughter.
“And as usual, you were right,” he said, eyes only for her.
“Silas p>
“Aaron.” They exchanged a firm handshake, two men testing but respecting each other.
Then he turned to me. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Venus p>
“Likewise,” I said with a smile.
“You should both come over for lunch tomorrow,” Rose said suddenly. “We clearly have a lot to catch up on p>
“We’d love that,” I said automatically. And let’s be honest-it wasn’t a request.
Her eyes flicked to the barely touched plate behind me.
“Oh-I interrupted dinner, didn’t I p>
“Not at all. Aaron was just being a tyrant,” I replied sweetly.
She laughed. “Oh, I know what that’s like. I’m the mom, but he acts like he’s the mom p>
“Ha ha. Funny,” Aaron muttered, but he didn’t deny it.
“We’re heading out,” she added suddenly, her voice quieter, tinged with something I couldn’t place.
“What? You just got here p>
“And I’m already bored,” she teased. “You
Aaron took a step forward. “I’ll walk you p>
“No. Stay with Venus. Silas is here p>
“Goodnight, Mom p>
“Night,” she said, kissing his cheek.
now I don’t like being out too long p>

Then she turned to me again, embracing me like I’d known her for years. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Venus p>

“Don’t be late,” she called over her shoulder, waving as they slipped away.
Silas and Aaron exchanged one final look. A silent take care of her.
When they were gone, I looked up at Aaron.

“Does she know?” I asked carefully.
His eyes snapped to mine. “No p>
