As if the entire world was coming crushing down my spine. Each step on the stairs, each exhale and inhale as I approached the basement felt like a war against myself. My legs felt heavy, my palms damp, my throat tight as if something was lodged there, refusing to go down.

The thought of meeting my mate, my Lycan King, and the man whom I thought had died made my heart go crazy, slamming violently against my ribs. What would I say when I faced him? Would I hug him? Would I cry? Would I tell him how much I loved him?

What reaction would be appropriate? Maybe I would freeze. Maybe… I would cry like a baby. Wouldn’t I look ugly?

All kinds of nonsense, unimportant thoughts kept playing in my mind, overlapping and crashing into each other. He was alive. My husband was alive. My King was still here, and I hadn’t lost him.

That thought alone was enough to make my heart race painfully.

I took a slow, deep breath, forcing my lungs to expand. My chest rose and fell as I reached for the lock. They put him in the basement? How dare they disrespect my man?

I was fuming, anger curling hot in my gut, yet at the same time my body buzzed with giddy anticipation, until

I opened the door.

The thick scent of Cassian’s Lycan hit my nostrils, heavy and overwhelming, like flowers laced with aphrodisiacs. My body shuddered violently. My knees almost buckled, my fingers curling reflexively as Rye purred excitedly inside me, her presence surging forward.

“Cassian! It’s my Cyrus!” Rye jumped in my mind, howling with joy.

I couldn’t hide my happiness. It burst out of me, forming into tears that blurred my vision as I slowly walked inside. My steps were unsteady, my breath uneven. The entire basement was dark. Only his scent filled the space, thick, dominant, alive.

Alive. My heart swelled painfully at that realization.

I reached for the switch and turned the lights on slowly, my breath catching as the empty, huge basement was exposed. For a heartbeat, my smile widened instinctively, my body already leaning forward, ready to run to him.

I turned.

But, The smile froze on my face.

Confusion and shock crept into my veins, cold and paralyzing.

“Cassian?” I breathed, my voice barely a whisper as my eyes landed on the Lycan before me.

He was chained to two large pillars, massive and towering, his body suspended and restrained by thick chains that bit into his fur. He wasn’t in his human form. He was fully Lycan.

My heart lurched violently, then dropped.

“WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?” I roared as I ran straight toward him. “Cassian! What happened? Open your eyes!” My hands reached for his face, but he was too tall, too distant, hanging there like something broken yet dangerous.

Tears burned my eyes as I wrapped my arms around his waist, my fingers digging into his fur as if holding on would anchor him back to me. His body was warm, so painfully warm, and that alone shattered me.

“What’s going on? Wake up. Please p>

Relief flooded me because he was alive, standing before me, breathing. But devastation followed immediately after, sharp and merciless, because this wasn’t how I was supposed to find him.

Seeing him like this tore something inside my chest.

As I cried, my face pressed against him, my shoulders trembling, I felt a sudden stir beneath my hands.

“Cassian.” I looked up sharply, my breath hitching as realization hit me.

His eyes opened. Cyrus’s chest made groaning sound.

Hope surged so fast it hurt. But before I could even speak, before I could ask what had happened, a loud snarl vibrated through the room. The sound was so violent it rattled my bones. In the next instant, his massive body moved.

Pain exploded through me as he thrashed me against the wall.

“Ugh!” I whimpered, an agonizing groan tearing from my throat as my back collided with the hard surface. The air was knocked out of my lungs, stars bursting behind my eyes.

“Grrrr p>

The deep, terrifying growl that came from him wasn’t familiar. It wasn’t my Cassian. It was raw, feral, void of recognition.

“It hurts! Why did you do that?” I slowly sat up, my body trembling as sharp pain radiated through my back. I sucked in a shallow breath, my chest burning. “Cassian! It’s me. Your p>

My words died right there.

Cyrus’s eyes, red as blood, were empty. Dull and Lost. They passed over me as if I wasn’t there at all. He slammed his hands against the wall again and again, muscles flexing violently as he struggled to break free from the chains. His roars echoed through the room like an impending disaster.

My heart sank. My stomach dropped. My chest tightened so painfully I struggled to breathe.

This wasn’t him.

Something was wrong. Something was terribly, horribly wrong with my man. He didn’t recognize me, he wasn’t in his mind.

I didn’t approach him again. Fear rooted me in place for a split second before instinct took over. I turned and ran upstairs as fast as I could, ignoring the way my back screamed in protest with every step.

“ROSETTA ESTELLE p>

My voice was sharp and deadly as I slammed the door open.

Draken, Carl, and Rosetta were sitting on the couch as if the world itself was perfect, as if nothing had shattered downstairs.

I went straight to her and grabbed her neck before I could control myself. My fingers tightened, my pulse roaring in my ears. I felt like I would go crazy if I didn’t get answers right now.

Rye was losing her mind. She couldn’t accept what I couldn’t and it made us one. Her rage collided mine, blocking the way to think properly.

“What did you do to him? Why is he acting like he doesn’t know me? What did you do to my mate?” I screamed into her face, Rye’s spirit clawing at my control, desperate to take over.

Rosetta looked like she would pass out. Her eyes were fixed on me, wide and panicked, her lips trembling, but no words came out.

“Tell me what happened to him. Why is he like this?” I asked again, my voice breaking this time, shaking despite my grip.

Rosetta tried to speak, but Carl chimed in once again. “Because it’s the other side of Cassian that he sometimes loses control of p>

My attention snapped to him, dark and cold. “What did you say p>

Carl stood up and walked toward me cautiously. “Let’s explain things. Before that, I hope you will not use violence p>

“Violence?” I laughed bitterly. “If this bitch didn’t mess with everything, I wouldn’t have lost people and my mate. Don’t teach me when I should use violence or not p>

He raised his hands immediately. “Fair enough. But at least let’s hear out what happened p>

“Come to the basement,” I demanded. “Whatever explanation you need to give, say it in front of him p>

“What? Don’t be unreasonable!” Rosetta finally found her voice. “He almost killed us. Who knew he was such a monster p>

My hand flew to her face before I could stop myself.

“Don’t you dare,” I hissed. “Not after creating this entire mess. The only monsters here are you all p>

“You p>

“You should do what she says,” Draken chimed in, his voice playful, eyes glinting with amusement. “Maybe you don’t know. But you’re dealing with an Alpha Wolf. And you already know… Alphas don’t think rationally when they’re angry p>

He smirked, leaning back into the chair.

“You are an Alpha?” Carl sounded disbelieving.

I didn’t waste my breath answering something meaningless.

“No wonder,” he muttered. “Fine. Let’s go there p>

“But-!” Rosetta tried to protest, but Carl shook his head.

“Complicating things won’t help you escape. Not when the people who can help you get out aren’t quite satisfied with you p>

She gritted her teeth, knowing exactly what he meant.
