“No!” I screamed. “ Don’t tell me to calm down. You don’t understand what this feels like. ”
Her voice cracked. “ I know I don’t. But I do know this–it could have been worse. ” She swallowed hard. “ He lost a lot of blood and went into shock, Sav. He flatlined twice during surgery. He almost died. His father had to donate blood to save him p>
My chest caved in.
“If his father hadn’t been here… ” she whispered, “we would be telling a very different story right now p>
I broke. I cried until my chest hurt. Until my throat burned. Until everything inside me felt hollow and raw.
“So what?” I sobbed. “What now? I’m supposed to be grateful that he’s trapped between life and death?” My voice shook violently. “That he’s basically a vegetable now? That nobody knows when–or if–he’ll wake up? ”
